Once again we approach the subject of the Alcaicería of Granada. This time we portray it under the subject of reality and fiction

El espacio real/ The real space
Ciudades históricas y eventos culturales” (Granada, 15-17 abril 2015)

The communication The Alcaicería of Granada. Reality and Fiction has been selected, via an open call, to be presented in the International Congress “La cultura y la ciudad. Imagen y representaciones de lo urbano. Ciudades históricas y eventos culturales” (Granada, 15-17 April 2015)

El espacio recreado / The recreated space
Abstract:
Granada's Alcaiceria can be considered as a post-touristic landscape (URRY, 1990). This historic landmark, originally a closed quarter but currently part of the urban fabric, has been dedicated to commerce uninterruptedly for, at least, the last five centuries. Nowadays, its recently restored and mimetic nineteenth-century atmosphere full of generic souvenirs and just a few local handmade products is a commercial, touristic and cultural hotspot. It is also a historic monument, although it sits on the sidelines.
This communication begins with a historic study. It tracks the origins of alcaicerias to show that they were an architectural typology that eventually evolved into a specific space. Granada's is the last example that stands of such a place in our context. By focusing the study on the chronicle of Granada's Alcaiceria we are shown how the place has evolved as a succession of commercial spaces to become the hybrid touristic-commercial space that is has become today. The last chapter of this story brings together this real space with a recreated space. Following the celebration of the First Millennial of the Kingdom of Granada with an event called "Alcaiceria of the Millennial" (Jaen and Almeria 2011 - Granada 2013), the word was given back its generic meaning, but this time with a contemporary fictional twist in the form of an itinerant paper mache market. This situates the issue within the context of the contemporary debate about how the image of our cities has been and still is created, including the imprint of the digital layer.

To analyze the details of the replicated Alcaiceria and to compare it with the evolution of the real Alcaiceria helps us outline key concepts regarding Granada's contemporary cultural context; a historic city heavily impacted by touristic activity as well as a longstanding and entrenched tradition in the recreation of its own image—the "myth of Granada (CALATRAVA, 2002).
Commerce, tourism, events and heritage intertwine to paint a picture that mixes, in differentiated doses, reality and fiction.

Biennale architettura Venezia 2014 (III): Absorbing Modernity 1914-2014

¿Cómo se muestra la arquitectura? / How is architecture shown?
Hoy: "diversión en los pabellones nacionales" / We wrap up our stroll through the Biennale Architetttura Venezia 2014. Today is the turn for "fun at the national pavilions"

With this third post we finish our very personal report after visiting the Venice Architecture Bienale (you can read the first post, about Elements, here, and the second, about Monditalia, here). The national pavilions were commissioned by Rem Koolhaas to work under the title "Absorbing Modernity 1914-2014" Their brief was:
"Absorbing Modernity 1914-2014" / National Pavilions
For the first time, the national pavilions are invited to respond to a single theme… 65 countries – in the Giardini, at the Arsenale and elsewhere in the city – examine key moments from a century of modernization. Together, the presentations start to reveal how diverse material cultures and political environments transformed a generic modernity into a specific one. Participating countries show, each in their own way, a radical splintering of modernities in a century where the homogenizing process of globalization appeared to be the master narrative…
[fuente/source: http://www.labiennale.org/en/architecture/exhibition/14iae/]

It was impossible for us to visit all the pavilions and as you can imagine, there is a degree of randomness in this post. It is worth pointing out that, from what we saw, it was hard to discern a common theme. So, this time around we will share three glimpses based on amusement, fragments of contents belonging to pavilions in which we had a little fun.

So, if our key word is amusement, our first remarks have to go to the Swiss pavilion, curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist under the title  "Lucius Burckhardt and Cedric Price – A stroll through a fun palace". The pavilion's empty space is the setting for a series of happenings that take place in real time.Carts are flung with boxes that contain copies of projects from Cedric Price's archive, papers you can touch, designs you can request to see or others that are shown randomly—like the surprising design for a cattle farm— and then taken away while the space darkens and a performance (see video) involving chanting and light projections takes place using the model of the Fun Palace as a sacred object that is ritualistically worshiped. We quite enjoyed this! In another space other objects appear and disappear, these relating to Lucius Burckhardt. It was really nice to get to know his work a little better. There are more surprises throughout the pavilion, work by artists and architects belonging to Obrist's circle, a global network built on friendship and fun, or that is what we like to think. Other activities and talks take place too, which complement the exhibit. All in all, it is a sort of creative mash-up with a performative twist which makes us reflect upon the idea of how architecture is shown and how these events come about.
"It's modern, everyting is connected"
Dibujo y humor / Drawing and humor
We were also amused by the large model of the "modern" house that appears—as one more character— in Jaque Tati's film Mon Oncle, shown in the French pavilion under the title ‘‘Modernity, a Promise or Threat?’’ and organized by Jean-Louis Cohen. Each of the rooms of this pavilion is and in-depth review of specific case studies involving the tragic role of modern, post-war architecture in the construction of alienating urban and built environments. The model is placed, as a prologue to these bleak stories, in the first and central space, under the title "Jacques Tati and the Arpel Villa, object of desire or a ridiculous machine?". Along with the model, scenes from the film are shown on large screens, and as an added treat, there are some really nice original drawings of the house's designs: the general plans as well as details of the fountain, topiaries, the house's "eyes", etc. These lively sketches convey the designer's excitement and happiness, making us smile and ask ourselves, once again, what went so wrong with modern architecture, when did it loose all of its hope and creativity and why did it disregard all aspects of affectivity, including a certain sense of humor, when it came to designing.

Urban Frottage: Calcando  / Tracing
Texturas del pavimento / Textures of the pavement
To finish this short report, we would like to mention the Japanese pavilion "A Storehouse of Contemporary Architecture" curated by Kayoko Ota. There was a lot to touch. move, displace. The place was full of stuff, and as occurs in a flea market, one had to rummage, which is always an adventuresome activity. To find the drawings by Tomoharu Makabe who traces the textures of floors inevitably takes one back to happier childhood times.

El árbol ya no está / The tree is now gone
However, we all know that not all in life is fun and games, and there has to be room for sadness. One of the grand trees around which  one of the Giardini's most beautiful buildings was build, the Nordic Pavilion, is now gone. That plane tree and the way it was integrated into the porch structure of Sverre Fehn's 1962 design is one of those images instilled in all of our minds, an image that for many of us revealed a sense of hope for modern architecture in particular and for our discipline in general , and how, at its best, it was capable of richly relating and absorbing—to use the term Koolhaas formulated for this biennale— the complexity of its environment, constructing spaces both beautiful and charged with meaning. We should not let sadness overcome us: the space left by the tree should remind us architects—beyond biennales and events— of the everyday, down-to-earth goals and responsibilities of our profession.

¡Adiós Bienal adiós! / Bye, bye Biennale!

Biennale architettura Venezia 2014 (II): Monditalia

Luminaire

Hoy toca Monditalia

Second post about our stroll through the Biennale architettura Venezia 2014. Today is Monditalia's turn

Monditalia is the third of the main components conceived by Rem Koolhaas for this edition of the Bienale—along with Elements of Architecture [click here to read our post about it] and the theme "Absorbing Modernity 1914-2014" which was interpreted in each of the national pavilions.

Esta es la descripción oficial / This is the official excerpt about the show:
"Monditalia / Arsenale: Also for the first time, Venice’s other biennales and festivals – Dance, Music, Theatre, Film – collaborate with architecture…
In a moment of crucial political change, we decided to look at Italy as a “fundamental” country, completely unique but also emblematic of a global situation where many countries are balancing between chaos and a realization of their full potential. The Arsenale presents a scan of Italy, established by 82 films, 41 architectural projects, and a merger of architecture with la biennale’s dance, music, theatre, and film sections. Each project in Monditalia concerns unique and specific conditions but together form a comprehensive portrait of the host country"
[source: http://www.labiennale.org/en/architecture/exhibition/14iae/]
We spent an entire Saturday afternoon at this exhibition, which occupies the elongated space of Arsenale's Corderie —in itself a wonder. Monditalia is a polyphonic show. Briefly, this fascinating space is divided longitudinally, to one side are the selected 41 research projects, placed one after another in the shape of small stands or installations which, in general, are easy to grasp, to the other side there is a collection of fragments of Italian films. Every once in a while there is an element in the center where the two longitudinal itineraries—movies and projects— crisscross and even alternate. This central element can be a structure for other activities such as dance and theatre shows or a space for a project that needs more room. We had no time to see any of the films, and we barely had time to scan over the projects—a term used by the show as you walk in—taking in some more than others.
"Favoritos @monditalia : 11 La maddalena 18 Assisi Laboratorio 20 Ground floor crisis 30 Radical pedagogies 36 Sales oddity 39 Italian limes"
In this post we would like to share our thoughts on a very limited selection of seven research projects, those that called our attention, warning in advance that we have surely left out some very interesting proposals and that this selection is merely a reflection of our personal ambles during that surprisingly rainy and stormy Saturday afternoon in July. For starters, we would like to share a couple of thoughts we tweeted that day, one as we walked in and one as we left. The latter already expressed a selection. Now, after the ensuing months, we have thought it best to adhere to the brevity of a tweet and we have decided to talk about those same projects, adding some extra information about each, like official excerpts from the show and short paragraphs that reflect our recollections and the thoughts that still lurk in our memories. These were the tweets (translated):
"Saturday afternoon @monditalia @la_Biennale Entering we are received by fragments of Siena's The Allegory of Good and Bad government"
"Favorites @monditalia : 11 La maddalena 18 Assisi Laboratorio 20 Ground floor crisis 30 Radical pedagogies 36 Sales oddity 39 Italian limes"
Nuestra selección / Our selection:

Luminaire.
Luminaire. OMA in collaboration with Swarovski. The entry gate is beautiful. Those of us from Andalusia cannot help but think of the gates that lead into our fair grounds, although this one is more elegant in design and composition. Needless to say it also reminded us of images from the best of Italian cinema, with its nostalgic twist, and of course of the Parisian electricity pavilion. The dimly-lit atmosphere of the vestibule, dotted with the shine of hundreds of light bulbs is a nicely festive spatial experience. Perpendicular to this gate and to its two sides, two reproductions of The Allegory of Good and Bad government envelop the visitor—it is always good to keep these paintings in mind.

La Maddalena [ video ]. Ila Bêka & Louise Lemoine. 41° 12’ 53’’ N / 09° 24’ 21’’ E

A double projection that does not leave anybody indifferent: to one side a Robinson Crusoe type who lives on an island and creates sculptures, furniture, etc, with debris retrieved from the sea; to the other side Stefano Boeri walks through and talks about the ruins of the building he designed and was never finished for the G8 summit in 2009, precisely in an emotionally charged place for the architect—the island were his mother worked as an architect. During the stroll the details of this abandoned and contradictory project are revealed and aspects about the architect's role in the process are pointed out.

How does one understand Assisi, a small town of 28,000 inhabitants that receives 6 million pilgrimming tourists a year? This project shows a series of four short interviews to four men that serve as guardians of the Saint Francis of Assisi Basilica, the epicenter of all touristic activities. The sequence of interviews spells out some interesting thoughts about the fascinating contemporary phenomenon of tourism, mixed in this case with religion, an alliance that reminds us that it may as well be the most ancient aspect of this activity.

Our fascination with maps and especially our time Venice spent mostly looking into the city's many graphical representations, and even our experience of the rare event of an aqua alta in July, led us to stop and enjoy this two sided map that illustrates the situation of Venice and Florence after the floods of November 4, 1966. To quote the author of the map "the flood [...] generated a tabula rasa in both spatial and temporal terms" [source: www.groundfloorcrisis.net]

At this point we lacked the time to enjoy this project, which occupied one the central spaces. Besides, when we got there, there were no more copies left of the leaflets devised to be taken by the visitors; the stands had been ransacked. We still have the web site http://radical-pedagogies.com/. A few days before our visit, an American friend whom we met up with in Venice had pointed out, showing a certain disagreement, that most of the things in Monditalia followed this format, that it was all somewhat like flipping through a book: something calls your attention at the show, you jot down the website and then you proceed to do the research at home.

This is the Best Research Project of the Biennale and as such it received the Silver Lion. It deserves the prize. The installation is flashy, colorful and fully reflects the television format and style of the Berlusconi of the eighties, which our generation experienced at its peak in Spain through Tele Cinco. The tulle model, unstable, floating and pierced by the lights of the projection, looks like it is about to fall a apart. It is held in place by tensors that bring to mind the models made out of strings and counterweights that abound in Spanish architectural tradition to calculate and design structures while also it also illustrates how inconsistent the architecture and cities of TV are. The project reveals a little known speculative, television-based urban planning. By the time we reached this stand—one of the last ones— we were a little tired, and the accelerated rhythm of the narrating voice makes it difficult to go too deeply into the story that accompanies the images, although the tangled repaltionship between the virtual world and urban reality comes across clearly. We wanted to sit down to take it in better, but a polite member of the security personnel reminded us that it was not allowed—there are also rules in the planning of events, exhibitions and shows.

At the very end, you once again run into a map. This time it reflects the fluctuating border between Italy and Austria, which is redrawn over and over again due to the movement of a glacier. You can even take a souvenir of this project, a map drawn in real time with the border as it stands at that precise moment. We took one, of course. A model sits next to the plotter, upon it a 3D projection shows the changing border from 1920 to our day.

¿Has estado? ¿coincides? ¿discrepas? ¿añades? ¿quitas?

¿Qué es arquitectura? en ARQUIA/PROXIMA

Fuera en Granada / Fuera in Granada
Señor Ministro, arquitectura es... in the catalog of the 4th edition of Arquia/Próxima Fuera 2104 [English text after Spanish version]

La llamativa instancia amarilla / The flashy yellow form

Fuera / Outdoors
Last Thursday October 23 we attended the fourth forum of the event, this year held in Granada. To begin with and very briefly we would like to congratulate all of those involved in the event in one way or another: those awarded, selected and cataloged as well as the participants, selection committee, organizers and the physically present as well as the virtual audience. We enjoyed the session as well as the days that followed. Thanks! On Thursday, as the event closed, we picked up our copies of the catalog, handed out to those who participated in the session.

The action ¿Qué es arquitectura? [What is architecture?]  is one of  120 cataloged works. Its presence in the publication is basically text along with four images: three photographs of the book and the flashy yellow form given to us at the registry of the Ministry. For Arquia-Próxima we read through the protest-book diagonally, across the collection of quotes, and came up with a possible answer to the question What is architecture? This answer is a mash-up using some of those quotes. The question and this mash-up introduce the text published in the catalog:

"If we need to define architecture—(which) is not necessarily a building—perhaps it would be... a way of imagining... happily... spaces which reflect a society's ambitions during a certain period of time or that satisfy its primordial needs... it is the expansion of the body...(by) means of reinventing... through collaborative practice...(that) which can only exist in a single way... a kind of vehicle... a sequence...(capable of) establishing moving relationships (within a) humanized space (that) offers a plurality of sensations... and builds... the framework for an intelligent way of life"[1]
Conclusión by Eva Franch
Our work appears not only in its assigned pages of the catalog, but it is also mentioned in the Conclusion, written by Eva Franch, the curator of this edition of the event. She writes:
"With writing comes dialectics: ¿Qué es arquitectura Señor Ministro, arquitectura es... [What is architecture? Dear Minister, architecture is...] by kauh arquitectos, is a project that aims to establish a dialogue with the powers that be and reveals the distinct gap that currently exists between the political body and the architectural body—assuming and synthesizing into those bodies the worst side of politicians and the best side of architects. The preconception that the political establishment has regarding the architect's role and the value given to architecture within a political agenda rarely allows architects to go beyond creating icons of questionable meaning or speculative development projects. Very rarely are there politicians who are capable of understanding the civic-minded, social and territorial role of architectural thought and practice." [2]

It is an honor for us to have our work appear in this catalogue, and we were especially thrilled to discover, through detailed reading, the words that the curator dedicates to this action in her conclusion. The goal of this proposal—carried out voluntarily and not as a product of a commission—is, after all, to provoke critical thought. Thank you Eva.

Presently, while going through the catalogue, we are underlining some sentences that may as well be answers and thoughts regarding the question we have formulated. We will go back to this, as the protest-book evolves.

It looks like this month of October the formulation What is architecture?—which we always regarded as an open question and as such is the way we understand the protest-book— has returned to our desks in full force, both with its inclusion in the Arquia/Próxima catalogue and in the exhibition ARQUITECTURA DISPUESTA at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo - CAAC, where besides showing the book visitors can take postcards, created for the show, of its transit from Granada to Madrid and write their answers to the question in a notebook with blank pages. And the journey of the book does not end here, we are now breathing more life into it and we hope to be able to tell you more about its new adventures soon!

ARQUITECTURA DISPUESTA

El Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC) abre el Secadero a procesos de documentación de proyectos y obras de arquitectura de equipos de arquitectos andaluces / The Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC) opens up the Secadero to design processes and to architectural works carried out by teams of Andalusian architects [English text after Spanish version]
Secadero, domingo pasado / last Sunday

La caja / The box

ENGLISH TEXT
algunas mesas de trabajo / some of the tables
"The program ARQUITECTURA DISPUESTA: PREPOSICIONES COTIDIANAS is an exhibition project, workshops and conference series that has as its goal to show the processes that some spatial practices are involved in. This program gathers together architecture proposals and works that display pragmatic and experimental approaches and that condense and manifest an intense relationship with the urban, social, political and productive environment in which they materialize." [This is how the text that accompanies the show begins]

Arquitectura dispuesta: preposiciones cotidianas is a curatorial project by Marta Pelegrín y Fernando Pérez (MEDIOMUNDO arquitectos). The exhibition brings together 20 projects-teams, and will be ongoing until November 2. Its opening, which took place last Thursday October 16 and continued through the weekend, began by expanding the exhibition itself through two conferences (RAUMLABOR and EXYZT), architecture workshops (unoccupied and architecture for kids) and the interaction between the participating offices.

This initial expansion of the show perfectly illustrates the nature of the exhibition. Marta and Fernando have come up with an enhanced exhibit in which the display of architecture—something difficult to carry out— turns into an opportunity for conversation, exchange and debate between the participants, the setting being not architecture as a finished object but its processes. The curators have emphasized the need to "show processes", the innards that are part of every architectural design and that in some cases become the project itself. To such an extent that the show in itself adheres to this notion in such a way that in the midst of all the materials one can find a box full a emails, notes, sketches, etc. that illustrate and reveal its origin and development, like yet another architectural piece.

The halls of the secadero [drying room] have been occupied with tables where the selected materials are shown, along with audiovisuals on a series of accompanying screens. The selection of proposals and teams helps spell out the current state of things and provides a glimpse into what, in the words of the curators, "some spatial practices are involved in".

After participating this weekend in the show's opening events—an becoming part of the show itself for a while— we can say that their statement includes some revealing words: some, which doesn't mean all; spatial practices, instead of architecture, and involved in as leitmotiv.

Some. This quantifying adjective speaks of an undefined number and type. In our understanding it means that beyond the show there are more proposals and teams that could also have taken part in it. In fact, before the opening there had been an open call for architectural projects and processes, the result of which is also shown. The adjective can be interpreted also in the sense that sometime in the future the exhibit could turn into a vehicle or a means of travel for future passengers: new projects and teams. This subtle aspect rids the show of the obligation of being a thorough and extended review of the Andalusian scene, which we sincerely doubt it never intended to be.

Spatial practices. What do we architects mean when we don't use the word architecture and instead choose the use neologisms and other terms? All the participants in the exhibit are architects; buildings, houses, public space, landscape projects as well as books, research material, interventions, participative tools and activist approaches are all shown, a diversity of materials that not everybody can relate to the word architecture. Hence its replacement with the term spatial practices, which draws on a professional scenario in which the areas of activity of architecture have expanded—be it within or beyond officialdom— but where space remains its main feature.

Involved in. This is perhaps the most categorical word in the sentence, because it entails taking a certain stance. The phrase that the curators have added following their opening statement clarifies this involvement: " architecture proposals and works that display pragmatic and experimental approaches and that condense and manifest an intense relationship with the urban, social, political and productive environment in which they materialize." Involve means to get into and to give meaning to. We like this double sense, because the show, through processes, brings us closer to what the twenty-some-odd teams are up to.

What are your thoughts about these ideas?

We would like to share the full text of the program (in Spanish) and some pictures, but what we really want is to recommend seeing the show. It is a great chance to see what an architecture exhibit can be about, both because they are rare events these days and because it is an opportunity to get to know some projects better, to learn about the processes behind architectural works, to enjoy reading the books shown, seeing the videos and the models—those beautiful objects that belong almost exclusively to the realm of architects— and even to take part in some of the exhibited work, given that at least three invite to interact and to continue building processes.

Finally, we would like to congratulate the organizers: friends, what a great job you've done! We also hope that the show has both geographical and temporal continuity. We would like to thank Marta and Fernando for counting on us on this adventure, it is always a pleasure to share our work [someday we will talk about what we displayed on our table in the secadero].
