¿Qué es arquitectura? un camino nuevo / a new path

El café viene con pregunta / Coffe is served with the question

English Text

We've always liked to say that ¿Qué es arquitectura? (What is architecture?) is an ongoing project. That is why every time we need to use "closing remarks" for it we use Fernando Pessoa poem In all, there were three things. In it the author expresses that the three things left are certainties: that one is always beginning, that one must go further and that one will be interrupted before finishing.

It all began, almost three years ago, as a political demand, in the shape of a collective action that produced a protest-book. Its first interruption occurred when we delivered these demands to the Minister. Then, it started up again a year ago in Seville. There, we laid out three things: we showed the interruption (a glass case with documents and a series of postcard-souvenirs), a continuation (we added a quote which was a collage of quotes—even though we came up the action, we never gave an answer to the question ourselves), and another beginning (an open notebook in order to gather new answers.)

As time has passed, the political aspect of the action has gradually vanished from the project's scope, and for a good reason: the new regulations that we protested against where withdrawn from legislative considerations. Another thing that has vanished, quite literally, is the ink from the petition form handed in at the Ministry— it has practically disappeared.

What remains?

Well, words remain, and their meaning. And also what we stated when the action began: "The action is an open platform, a collective collection of information. Hence we will be able to count on a panoramic view of what architecture is, through history but mainly nowadays."

Evora marks a new path.

Part of What is architecture? is to delve into how its content is communicated: up until now more than 220 answers have been submitted, as quotes and reflections. But, how can we disseminate this content?

from search... the encounter

We will see you in Evora, at Arquitetura Disposta: Preposições Quotidianas (Architecture Set: Everyday Life Prepositions), the show will be open from October 3 to November 20. Coffee will be served with the question.
