Margen y Ciudad es un grupo de exposiciones organizado por el Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC). De las seis exposiciones que han conformado esta sesión enfocada en la ciudad, aún se pueden visitar cuatro. Os queremos contar nuestra visita a dos de ellas: A las ciudades se las conoce, como a las personas, en al andar y la exposición individual dedicada a Lara Almarcegui. Comenzamos hoy una serie de cuatro entradas.

Margin and City is a group of exhibitions organised by the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC). Of the six units that have comprised this exhibition session that focuses on the city, four can still be visited. We would like to tell you about our visit to two of them: Cities, like People, Can Be Recognized by Their Walk and the solo exhibition by Lara Almarcegui. We will be publishing a series of four posts including this one. (English text continues after Spanish text)

A las ciudades se las conoce, como a las personas, en el andar es una exposición colectiva a partir de los fondos del CAAC. En sus propias palabras está “basada en una de las líneas de la colección del Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo -que tiene a la ciudad y al paso de lo rural a lo urbano como ejes”. Al visitar esta exposición podemos imaginar como sería una exhibición permanente dedicada a Arquitectura y Ciudad, si ésta estuviera siempre expuesta. Pero no es así, por ello es una buena ocasión para conocer cómo es esta línea central de la colección, (estará abierta hasta el próximo 4 de marzo). La exposición muestra una gran variedad de obras: más de 250 piezas de 48 artistas. Y se encuentra dispersa por todo el recinto: Área Monumental, Ala Norte, Pabellón real, Capilla de Fuera, Biblioteca y exteriores.

Desde nuestro punto de vista, es una exposición hecha a su vez de exposiciones. Las obras se aglutinan atendiendo a subtemas que parten del hilo común de la ciudad. En su conjunto se trata de un amontonamiento contemporáneo que refleja la complejidad de la ciudad. El espacio expositivo, un antiguo monasterio convertido en fábrica de cerámicas, que luego fue pabellón de una expo para acabar siendo la sede de varias importantes instituciones culturales (entre ellas el CAAC), es probablemente el lugar idóneo para tal evento. Y no sólo por la singularidad del conjunto de edificios, sino porque su disposición hasta cierto punto recuerda el escapismo al que el suburbanismo siempre aspiró. En este sentido, el monasterio de la Cartuja es, en si, parte integrante y elemento integrador de esta compleja exposición.

Por supuesto es necesaria más de una visita para disfrutar plenamente de la exposición y del recinto. ¡No os la perdáis!

Plano Cartuja/ Cartuja plan: collage, de lo rural a lo urbano / from rural to urban

Cities, like People, Can Be Recognized by Their Walk is a collective exhibition with works belonging to the CAAC Collection. In their own words it is “designed around one of the central lines of the collection of the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo - which focuses on the city and the transition from rural to urban”. Visiting this exhibition one could imagine how an Architecture and City Wing would be like if the collection were permanently exhibited. However, this is not the case. It is temporary, so it is a unique opportunity to get to know more about this central line of the Collection (on show until March 4). The exhibition has a wide variety of contents. There are more than 250 pieces by 48 artists. It is also spread about the complex: the Monumental Area, North Wing, Royal Pavilion, Outer Chapel, Library and exteriors.

From our point of view it is an exhibition of multiple exhibitions. Artworks are grouped attending to different subthemes related with the city. As a whole, it is a very contemporary mishmash that mirrors the complexity of the city. The venue, a former monastery-come ceramics factory-come pavilion of an expo-come the headquarters of major public cultural institutions (among them the CAAC) is probably the perfect place for this exhibition. And not only because of the singularity of such a building complex, but because its layout reminisces, to a certain degree, the escapism that suburbanism has always sought after. In this sense, the Monastery of La Cartuja is, in itself, an integral part and the integrating element of this exhibit.

Of course, you need more than one visit to fully enjoy this exhibition and its space. Don't miss it!

La ciudad no es simplemente una solución racional a los problemas de producción, distribución, tráfico e higiene —o una respuesta automática a la presión ejercida por las fuerzas naturales o de mercado, sino que también tiene que englobar las esperanzas y los temores de sus ciudadanos./ The city is not only a rational solution to the problems of production, marketing, circulation and hygiene —or an automatic response to the pressure of certain physical and market forces— but it also has to enshrine the hopes and fears of its citizens. ¿Cómo proyectar un parque en un lugar sujeto a inundaciones y que en un futuro cercano puede que en su mayor parte quede bajo el agua al subir previsiblemente el nivel del mar?

Nuestra propuesta establece las bases formales, programáticas y técnicas para conseguir la transformación de un solar que en la actualidad es meramente intrigante, en un lugar a través del tiempo, desde su inmediata conversión a parque hasta su futura visualización como espacio público inundado. En todo este proceso que será “la vida del parque”, el parque es entendido como una institución pública y democrática en la que se representen los habitantes de la ciudad y la ciudad como colectivo, que acoja a recién llegados y a visitantes.

Agua y topografías/Water and topography. Conexión y centralidad/Connectivity and centrality. Borde y contacto/Edge and contact.

Para conseguir este alto nivel de significado urbano, nuestra primera aproximación toma la forma de un acto fundacional: delineamos los márgenes del área para que el borde pase a ser un elemento espacial y estructurante en sí mismo. Esta acción proviene del límite natural que son los cerros de granito que rodean el solar, además de la necesidad de establecer, para el futuro, un perímetro de control de inundaciones a una altura adecuada sobre la cota de inundabilidad. Simultáneamente funciona como elemento de transición simbólico y espacial entre la ciudad y el nuevo parque, a la vez que es soporte para parte del programa del parque y punto de partida para futuros crecimientos hacia los bosques en las colinas.

En el espacio surge un nuevo paisaje simbólico que registra e interpreta una de las cualidades que más identifican a Nynäshamn: su topografía. El lugar se modela utilizando la propia materialidad de la ciudad, produciendo una agradable topografía continua de colinas, cuencos y áreas planas llenas de posibilidad y atentas a la escala del parque. Esta acción hace que emerja, de manera natural, una plaza dentro del parque, precisamente en el entorno en que el camino de Estogangen lo cruza. Este importante elemento de conectividad urbana (es un paseo que vertebra la comunidad) se ensancha para convertirse en el corazón del espacio público, una explanada dónde se produce el encuentro colectivo.

Este nuevo paisaje inventado tiene cualidades que van más allá de lo simbólico, tiene una componente sostenible y funcional que, de hecho, determina las características formales de la propuesta. Los cuencos y colinas se entienden como un conjunto de intervenciones infraestructurales necesarios para controlar y realzar la presencia del agua, ya sea cuando aparece estacionalmente, en forma de inundaciones esporádicas o cuando su presencia sea permanente dado la prevista subida del nivel del mar. En su diversidad de formas, materiales, localizaciones y funciones, las topografías retienen, conducen y filtran el agua para incorporarla al parque en forma de pequeños lagos y estanques que asumen diversos papeles formales y funcionales: contemplación, baño, atmósfera, riego, patinaje…

La tecnología natural que esta topografía dispone, permite a Nynashamn visualizar el anunciado futuro de subidas del nivel del mar, con esperanza y como valor potencial. Este acercamiento estratégico confiere al parque de los atributos necesarios para preparar su natural evolución hacia un paisaje completamente nuevo que evoca sus propios orígenes. Tras la inundación, el parque se convertirá en un lago salpicado de islas, puentes y actividades acuáticas. Rodeándolo surgirá un paseo lleno de funciones urbanas; los árboles que durante años crecieron en el parque y que no sobrevivieron a la inundación continuarán su vida como materiales para la construcción del paseo —el parque se recicla y tansforma. Estogangen se convertirá en un espacio público flotante en el centro del cual, sobre la traza de la antigua plaza dónde tantas cosas tuvieron lugar, surgirá una popular zona de baños: la plaza, convertida en piscina, permanece, en la conciencia colectiva, como el punto de referencia emocional del espacio parque.

THE LIFE OF THE PARK es nuestra propuesta para el concurso EUROPAN 11. EUROPAN SUECIA: localización Nynasham. Resultó no premiada. Tuvimos el placer de tener colaborando con nosotros a Begoña Leal, quién nos ayudó en la recta final y en la elaboración de la presentación, ¡muchas gracias!

How to design a park in an area that is prone to flood and will probably be, in the most part, permanently covered by water with the predicted rise of sea levels?

Our proposal establishes the formal, programmatic and technical guidelines to achieve the transformation of a site that is merely intriguing into a place traced by time, beginning with its immediate conversion into a park and pointing out its future as a flooded public space. Throughout this process, which will be “the life of the park”, the park is understood as a public, democratic institution in which the town’s inhabitants represent themselves and their community as well as embrace visitors and new-comers.

El agua y el crecimiento del parque / Water and the park's growth

To reach the desired level of urban significance, our first approach is a founding act: we delineate the new place’s edges so that the border becomes a structural and spatial element in itself. In our case this act is determined by the presence of the granite outcroppings that surround the site and the need to establish a future flood control perimeter ring at an adequate height above the flooding level. Simultaneously it also servers as a symbolic and spatial transitional element between the town and this new proposed space, as the framework for the park’s complementary program as well as the possible starting point for growth into the wooded hills.

A new landscape takes shape within the space that reads and interprets one of Nynashamn’s most defining physical traits: its topography. The site is shaped using the towns own matter into an agreeable topography of mounds and bowls that intertwine in continuity with large, flatter open spaces, all of which evokes a world of possibilities while staying in tune with the scale of the park. This approach allows for the natural emergence of a plaza within the park, precisely in the area in which the Estögangen crosses it. Thus this important element of urban connectivity (it is main walkway that vertebrates de entire community) widens to become the heart of the public space, an esplanade and a square within it where collective expressions occur.

Paisajes simbólicos: ciclos estacionales y visión futura / Symbolic landscapes: seasonal cycles and the vision of the future

This new, invented landscape has qualities that go beyond the symbolic. It has a utilitarian and sustainable component which actually informs the formal nature of the intervention. The sequence of bowls and hills is conceived as the sum of the infrastructural interventions deemed necessary in order to control and enhance the presence of water in the area, be it the sporadic floods of each winter or the predicted rise of sea levels and the permanent flooding this implies. The bowls and hills, in their different shapes, natural materials, locations and functions, retain, guide and filter sporadic flood water so as to incorporate it into the park in the form of ponds and reservoirs that can take up different formal and programmatic functions: contemplation, atmosphere, skating, watering, swimming…

The natural technology that this topography puts into place, allows Nynashamn to envisage a possible future of rising sea levels with both hope and potential. This strategic approach empowers the park and prepares it for its natural evolution into a whole new landscape that reminisces its own origin. Once fully flooded, the park becomes a lake riddled with islands, bridges and aquatic activities. Encircling it as a boardwalk full of urban functions; the trees that have grown over the years and don’t survive the rise of the waters continue their productive lives as materials used for its construction: the park transforms and recycles itself. The Estogangen becomes a floating public space in the middle of which a popular bathing area appears on the traces of the plaza where once so many things occurred and so many people met: the plaza turned swimming pool thus remains as the entire public space’s emotional point of reference in the collective consciousness.

THE LIFE OF THE PARK is our proposal for the EUROPAN 11 Competition. EUROPAN SVERIGE: Nynasham site. It wasn't laureated. We had the pleasure of having Begoña Leal collaborate with us, helping us with the final stages of the project and the final layout; thanks a lot!

Esta entrada continua nuestra visita a dos exposiciones: Owen Jones y la Alhambra y MC Escher Universos Infinitos. Ambas se basan en el impacto que supuso para los artistas su visita a La Alhambra. Hoy os contamos la dedicada al arquitecto Owen Jones. / This post is a continuation of the previous one about our recent visit to two exhibitions: Owen Jones and the Alhambra and MC Escher Infinite Universes. Both focus on the impact that visiting the Alhambra had on the artists. Today we will review the one dedicated to the architect Owen Jones. (English text continues after Spanish text)

Esta exposición es maravillosa. Se ubica en un cuadrante de la planta superior del Palacio de Carlos V, y dividida en varias salas describe el trabajo científico de Owen Jones (Londres 1809-1874) sobre la Alhambra y su influencia posterior en diseñadores y arquitectos.
En la muestra se pueden contemplar varios ejemplares del libro de Jones Planos, alzados, secciones y detalles de la Alhambra que recopila la decoración de la Alhambra, así como croquis y dibujos a mano del trabajo de campo realizado por el autor. El objetivo original de este trabajo era buscar leyes científicas del uso del ornamento y el color en la arquitectura, tomando al monumento granadino como objeto de estudio y demostración de sus tesis. Esta cuestión también es el leif motiv de la obra más conocida de Jones, La gramática del ornamento, del cual también hay ejemplares en la exposición. Este manual se convirtió en libro de cabecera y estudio para diseñadores y arquitectos, y su influencia queda reflejada en una sala dedicada a trabajos de otros autores basados en las reflexiones de Jones, entre los que se encuentran dibujos de Le Corbusier.

Estudios decorativos y el Crystal Palace / Decoratives studies & Crystal Palace

La exposición destaca también otros devenires de la visita de Jones a la Alhambra y que contribuyó decisivamente a la popularización del monumento. En 1851, el arquitecto recibió el encargo de decorar el Crystal Palace de Joseph Paxton, encontrando así una ocasión única para aplicar sus teorías del ornamento y el color. En diversa documentación gráfica se puede observar cómo Jones tiñó la impoluta estructura blanca de Paxton con los colores del monumento granadino, para así modular y organizar los diversos espacios expositivos. Transformó los interiores del Crystal Palace, dotándolos de singularidad y una alta dosis de exotismo. Quizás por ello y en un episodio que supone una vuelta de tuerca más, una vez desmantelado el Crystal Palace original, le encargan la construcción de una réplica del Patio de los Leones para el nuevo Crystal Palace reconstruido en Sydenham. Las imágenes que se observan en la exposición muestran desde el folleto explicativo de la época, a su construcción —en parte llevada a cabo por mujeres tal y como refleja una fotografía de época en la que se las puede ver como ataviadas con sus vestidos victorianos alicataron con delicadas teselas la instalación—, a diversos eventos y promociones comerciales que en el patio acontecieron. Esta réplica dentro de otra réplica encierra una siniestra belleza: un paraíso exótico de mocárabes, azulejos, columnas de mármol y rumor de agua que representa a un patio, encerrado en la atmósfera neutra de una entonces moderna construcción fabril de hierro y vidrio. Hoy estamos acostumbrados a ver estas rarezas en ferias, exposiciones y centros comerciales, pero podemos imaginar la sorpresa y fascinación que debió generar en su época. Durante años (hasta 1936, en que ardió el Crystal Palace de Sydenham) este espacio ficticio fue visitado por millones de personas y fue probablemente el mejor embajador de la Alhambra.
Ambas facetas de la exposición nos llevan a reflexionar y valorar, en claves actuales, cómo la inicial ensoñación romántica de Owen Jones pasó a convertirse, por un lado, en moderna observación científica y por otro, en germen y motor de divulgación masiva de La Alhambra.

Réplica del Patio de los Leones / Replica of the Alhambra’s Patio de los Leones

English Text:

This exhibit is fascinating. Its venue is a quadrant on the top floor of the Palacio de Carlos V, and it is divided into a series of rooms that describe the research into the Alhambra carried out by Owen Jones (London 1809-1874) and its latter influence on designers and architects.
Throughout the show you can contemplate various copies of Jones’ book Plans, elevations, sections, and details of the Alhambra, which compiles the Alhambra’s décor, as well as drafts and sketches result of his field work. The goal of Jones’ endeavour was to find the scientific laws that ruled the use of ornament and color in architecture, using this foremost of monuments as his object of study and proof of his ideas. This same theme is the leif motiv of Jones’ best known work The Grammar of Ornament, copies of which are also on view at the exhibit. This book became a reference and a study manual for designers and architects, and its influence is made patent in a room dedicated to other authors who based their studies on Jones’. Among the materials there are some drawings by Le Corbusier.

The exhibit also underlines another aspect of the architect’s visit to the Alhambra which contributed decisively to the monument’s popularization. In 1851, Jones was commissioned to decorate Jospeh Paxton’s Crystal Palace. Here he would find a unique opportunity to apply his theories about ornament and color. In a variety of graphic information you can see how Jones tinged Paxton’s pristine white structures with the tones of the Spanish monument in order to modulate and organize the pavilion’s exhibition spaces. He thus transformed the Crystal Palace’s interiors, giving them a clear identity with an exotic touch. Perhaps because of this and in a chapter that is yet another twist in this story, once the Crystal Palace was dismantled, Jones was commissioned to build a replica of the Alhambra’s Patio de los Leones within the new Crystal Palace to be built at Sydenham. At the exhibit you can see copies of original brochures, pictures of its construction process —carried out in part by a team of women, as shown in an astonishing photograph, in which they are dressed in Victorian wear delicately laying tiles— and of commercial events that took place once the courtyard was finished. This replica within a replica reveals a sinister beauty: a paradise of stalactite work, tiles, marble columns and gurgling water contained within the neutral atmosphere of what was then a modern construction of steel and glass. Nowadays we are used to seeing these strange things at fairs, expos and shopping malls, but we can imagine how surprising and captivating the experience must have been back then. Over the years (up until 1936, when a fire destroyed Sydenham's Crystal Palace), this fictional space received millions of visits and was probably the Alhambra’s best embassador.

Both of the exhibit's aspects have led us to reflect upon, as well as appreciate in contemporary terms, how Owen Jones’ initial romantic reverie became, on the one hand, a form of modern scientific observation and, on the other, the origin and driving force for the massive spread of knowledge about the Alhambra.

Lo abstracto y lo concreto / Abstraction & concretion

La imagen escogida para el calendario kauh 2012 proviene de Soil Cutaway Garden. La propuesta es un manifiesto que se acerca a dos conceptos clave para el paisaje contemporáneo sobre los que seguiremos trabajando en este año que acaba de empezar: la transformación y la transitoriedad.

The image chosen for kauh's 2012 calendar comes from Soil Cutaway Garden. The proposal is a manifesto that encompasses two key concerns in contemporary landscape that we will work on in the year that has just begun: transformation and transience. (English text continues after Spanish text)

Dibujar "blando" / Soft drawing

Mediante la cuidadosa excavación del terreno hasta llegar al nivel freático a -1.5m, retirando cada una de sus capas casi quirúrgicamente, apilando este material junto al vacío resultante de la excavación, y extendiendo los estratos en el mismo orden, la propuesta muestra que trabajar el paisaje es un proceso de transformación en el que el equilibrio dentro del lugar de actuación juega un papel crucial.

Los atributos de la tierra / the attributes of earth

Este jardín es la materia del sitio en sí mismo, desde el nivel freático hasta el cielo. La habitualmente oculta tecnología de la sección del terreno y todos sus componentes se exponen a la vista, tanto hacia abajo, hacia lo más profundo de la tierra, como hacia arriba, hacia la vida que acontece en la superficie. Para conseguir esto, la retención del terreno en la parte excavada y la contención en la parte amontonada se realiza usando vidrios reforzados transparentes, a través de los cuales los visitantes pueden apreciar el comportamiento dispar de los materiales del suelo, sus cambios en el tiempo una vez manipulados y expuestos, al igual que su influencia sobre los artificiales paisajes horizontales resultantes y sus ecosistemas: un brillante charco de agua y una pradera salvaje.

By carefully digging into the soil until reaching the water table at -1.5m, removing each of its layers in a surgical manner, piling these materials next to this void, and laying out the strata in the same order, the proposal shows that gardening is a transformation process in which equilibrium within a site plays a crucial role.

Percepción / Perception

The garden is made up of the matter of the place itself, from the water table to the sky, with the usually unseen technology of the soil’s section and its components revealed and in full view, both downwards towards the deeper realms of the earth and upwards towards the life that takes place above ground. To achieve this, retention in the excavated part and contention of the pile is obteined by means of transparent reinforced security glass, through which visitors can experience the different behaviours of the soil’s diverse materials, their change in time once they have been manipulated and exposed, as well as their influence on the resulting horizontal man-made landscapes and ecosystems: a shimmering puddle of water and a wild prairie.

Paula, who we had the pleasure of working very closely with when the three of us directed and edited the magazine Neutra, leads the passionate project Ediciones VIB[]k which is developing a new editorial concept in accordance with the digital age, in which information exchange and the mutability of contents are the norm. A certain amount of confusion or, to state it in better terms, subtleties between variations, are definitely part of our time, and, among other many questions, the book inevitably takes part in all of these processes. This, which is just her first book, has already had great reviews and awards, some as prestigious as the Premio FAD Thought & Criticism 2011. We can’t wait to see the upcoming ones! Arquitecturas Colectivas/ Collective Architectures | Santiago Cirugeda et al

Camiones, Contenedores, Colectivos es una iniciativa del arquitecto Santiago Cirugeda (Recetas Urbanas) que implica a más de una docena de colectivos en la creación de una red de espacios auto-gestionados por toda la geografía española. Lo que comenzó como un mapa de guerra con la península española como campo de batalla evoluciona hasta transformarse en la red de cooperación internacional "Arquitecturas Colectivas".
Trucks, Containers, Collectives is an initiative by Santiago Cirugeda (Recetas Urbanas) which has inspired dozens of collectives to get involved in creating Collective Architectures, a network for spaces that are self-managed by the entire Spanish territory. This is no longer a matter of experimenting with individual, isolated situations, a process which Cirugeda initiated fourteen years ago and, in any case, is being reassessed during these times of recession. Rather it’s a self-organised and joint action taken by small citizen groups who unite their efforts. What begins as a war map having the Spanish peninsula as its battleground leads to an international cooperation network.

El fin de semana pasado visitamos estas 2 exposiciones en Granada: Owen Jones y la Alhambra y M.C Escher Universos Infinitos. Ambas se basan en el impacto que supuso para los artistas su visita a La Alhambra. Nos gustaría compartir nuestra experiencia en 2 entradas, una para cada exposición.
Last weekend we visited these 2 exhibitions in Granada: Owen Jones and La Alhambra and M.C. Escher Infinite Universes. Both exhibitions are based on the impact that the visit to La Alhambra had on the artists. We would like to share with you our experience in two posts, one for each exhibition. Comenzamos con la exposición de Escher. Esta muestra se puede ver en dos localizaciones de Granada. Nosotros hemos visitado la parte expuesta en La Alhambra, en la Capilla del Palacio de Carlos V. La exposición es pequeña pero preciosa. Junto a algunos famosísimos dibujos del autor, hay una interesante proyección y un par de acertadas instalaciones especialmente diseñadas en relación con el sitio. Aprovechándose de la increible localización y acorde a la obra de Escher, la proyección multipantalla se ha diseñado para la capilla octogonal, y las instalaciones son ventanas desde el espacio expositivo a su entorno inmediato. La capilla se ubica justo en la esquina en la cual se encuentran el Palacio de Carlos V y el Patio de los Arrayanes de los Palacios Nazaríes. La primera ventana, "Escalera del tiempo", es en sí una ventana de la sala. Ésta mira a las escaleras monumentales que parten del grandioso patio circular del palacio y desembarcan en una angosta estancia adyacente al Patio de los Arrayanes. Podemos por lo tanto decir que no dan a ninguna parte (al menos directamente). Esta escalera, oculta durante años, fue recuperada en una intervención que concluyó en el año 2001.
La segunda ventana, "Cruce de mundos", es una pequeña habitación efímera (parte del montaje de la exposición). Aprovecha la existencia de una pequeña ventana, al ras del suelo, que pertenece al palacio. La experiencia desde aquí es increíble. Se puede apreciar el espacio residual entre los dos edificios, una especie de abismo entre el palacio y el patio, un umbrío vacío en forma de prisma de base triangular cuyas caras son la descarnada cara interior de la fachada nazarí que da al Patio de los Arrayanes; el muro ciego de una caja de escaleras; el alzado, en este punto desnudo, del palacio renacentista; un suelo de piedra irregular y una sencilla cubierta de madera. La luz se cuela entre la sombra general de este espacio "olvidado" y silencioso a través de celosías y resquicios de carpinterías. A través de esta atmósfera se contempla el Patio de los Arrayanes y a los turistas que por él deambulan sin cesar. E incluso si entornas la mirada y la enfocas hacia el fondo se puede llegar a ver el interior de la Sala de los Embajadores. La experiencia de percibir este vertiginoso espacio entre dos de las arquitecturas más paradigmáticas de La Alhambra es difícil de describir. Nos atrevemos a decir que estamos ante uno de los espacios más intrigantes de la Historia de la Arquitectura, ahora revelado gracias a esta exposición. Y al cual sin duda volveremos. ¡No deberías perdertelo!

Recuperación de la Escalera del Zagüan Norte del Palacio de Carlos V

English text:

Today we will start talking about the Escher exhibition. It takes place simultaneously in two locations in the city of Granada. We have visited the part shown in La Alhambra, in the Chapel of the Palace of Charles V. The exhibition is small but exquisite. Along with some of MC Escher's most well-known drawings, an amazing audiovisual projection and two in situ installations are exhibited. Taking advantage of the stunning location and in sync with Escher's work, the multi-screen projection is displayed in the octogonal room originally designed as the chapel. The installations are windows that relate the exhibition space with its surroundings. The Chapel is located within a corner of the Palace of Charles V, right where it meets the Patio of the Arrayanes in the Nasrid Palace. The first window, "Stairs of Time", is a window of the space per se looking onto a monumental staircase that connects the grand circular courtyard of the palace with a tiny room next to the patio. It could be said that the staricase leads to nowhere (directly, at least). This staircase remained hidden for years and it was recently restored during an intervention that finished in 2001.
The second window, "Crossed Worlds", is a tiny ephemeral room (part of the exhibition’s layout), that makes the most out of a pre-existing floor-level window belonging to the Renaissance palace. The experience from here is amazing. You can grasp the residual space that exists between the two buildings, a sort of abyss between the palace and the patio, a shadowy emptiness in the shape of a triangular based prism with the following faces: the denuded inner side of the Nasrid façade of the Patio de los Arrayanes; the blank wall of a staircase; the starkness of elevation of this part of the Renaissance palace; an irregularly paved stone floor and a simple wood ceiling. Light pierces the shadows of this “forgotten” and silent space through the lattice work of a couple of windows and cracks in the doorways, small openings that also allows us to contemplate the Patio de los Arrayanes and the never-ending procession of tourists that traverse it. If you concentrate and focus your gaze you can even see, through this mysterious atmosphere, all the way across the patio, into the interior of the Sala de los Embajadores. The experience of perceiving this dramatic space between two of the Alhambra’s most paradigmatic architectures is hard to describe. We can say that is one of the most intriguing spaces in the history of architecture, now revealed thanks to this exhibition. We will definitely return to this space. You shouldn't miss it!

Hemos recibido el reportaje de “Los Olivareros” realizado por el fotógrafo utrerano Pepe Florido / We have received the pictures of “Los Olivareros” taken by Pepe Florido, a photographer native of Utrera. (English text continues after Spanish text)

Tiempos: Concurso ganado en enero de 2009. Obra parte del Plan E. Redacción de proyecto básico y ejecución en un mes. Entregado el 31 de marzo de 2009. Licitación resuelta 3 meses después. El verano andaluz no perdona y la obra comienza en septiembre 2009. Año apasionante de obras. Finaliza en septiembre 2010. “Los Olivareros” se inaugura y abre al público el 23 de marzo de 2011.

En ese periodo de impasse entre la finalización oficial de la obra y su definitiva puesta en uso, tuvimos la suerte de que Pepe Florido se acercara al edificio y volcara sobre él su particular mirada. Cuando contamos esta intervención, casi siempre mencionamos su contexto urbano en transición. El entorno se mueve entre la desolación del peor planeamiento urbanístico contemporáneo, el aburrimiento de unas construcciones residenciales banales y la sinceridad de unas decrépitas arquitecturas industriales. Este confuso medio urbano, y en particular su versión utrerana y andaluza, lleva siendo objeto de la obra fotográfica de Pepe Florido desde hace ya algún tiempo. Así pues, sonreímos al ver cómo reacciona su objetivo de manera tan natural al enfocar sobre una intervención que, siempre entendimos, debía tener sus resonancias e incluso subrayar la necesidad urbana y espacial que nuestras ciudades tienen para que exista este paisaje de tensiones y confluencias.

Time line: A competition won in January 2009; the project becomes part of the central government’s economic stimulus plan. A full project drawn up in one month; handed in on March 31 2009. Call for tender solved in three months time. The Andalusian summer prevails and breaking ground takes place in September 2009. A thrilling year of building. Construction ends in September 2010. “Los Olivareros” is inaugurated and opens to the public on March 23 2011.

In the interim period between the end of construction work and its definite put to use, we were lucky enough to have Pepe Florido visit “Los Olivareros” and capture it through his own perspective. Whenever we explain this intervention, we almost always mention the transient nature of its urban context. Its surroundings waver between the desolation produced by the worst kind of contemporary urban planning, the boredom of trivial housing units and the sincerity of decrepit industrial architectures. This confusing urban milieu, and specifically Utrera’s and southern Spain’s version of it, has been an ongoing theme in Pepe Florido’s photographic work. That is why we smile when we see how his lens reacts naturally when it focuses upon a building that, as we always understood it, had to echo and even underline the urban and spatial need our cities have for the existence of this landscape of tensions and convergences.

Esta visita ha sido organizada por los compañeros de accésit (¡gracias!). La exposición se puede visitar hasta el próximo día 25 de noviembre en el Estudio Alminar en la calle Jesús del Gran Poder, 41 en Sevilla.

Pensamos que es un auténtico lujo contar con una exposición de esta calidad en Sevilla y os queremos recomendar que vayáis a visitarla, ¡no os la podéis perder!. En la muestra se pueden admirar mas de cien magníficos dibujos de Alvaro Siza exquisitamente montados en un ambiente cordial que, si acaso, engrandece aún más la obra del maestro. De entre los conocidos dibujos del arquitecto portugués, esta exposición revisa un lado muy íntimo de Siza: su maestro Távora, sus amigos, la familia, las mascotas, autorretratos y los simbólicos caballos entre otros. La selección fue originalmente expuesta en Oporto y comisariada por Carlos Castanheira, aunque aquí en Sevilla ha sido ajustada al espacio expositivo y reagrupada en familias que subrayan el carácter de series. Hoy además hemos tenido la oportunidad de conocer de primera mano, a través de nuestro guía, cómo Siza los dibuja, en qué momento, qué le provoca dibujarlos o, por ejemplo, cómo en un gesto de generosidad los acaba regalando a sus amigos. Toda una lección en estos tiempos.
Entre las particularidades de la exposición, cabe destacar que comparte espacio con un estudio de arquitectura, lo cual resulta una interesante apuesta de los organizadores y plantea cuestiones acerca de los espacios de trabajo, los límites de privacidad o los procesos de trabajo e información del proyecto de arquitectura.
Otra de las oportunidades que ofrece esta exposición es adquirir su catálogo original. Una exquisita edición, que, transmite la sensación de tener, entre nuestras manos, un original de los famosos cuadernos de dibujo ¡Todo un regalo! Además, al adquirirlo por un muy buen precio, se está colaborando con una asociación que desarrolla proyectos de escuelas en la India.
Por último, nos gustaría dar la enhorabuena y las gracias a los organizadores de la exposición aquí en Sevilla, Estudio Alminar y RubiñoGarcíaMárquez Arquitectos. Y les deseamos buena suerte en esta aventura de espacio expositivo.

Today's visit was organized by our colleagues from accésit (thanks!). The exhibit is on show at Estudio Alminar, calle Jesús del Gran Poder #41 in Sevilla, until November 25.
In our opinion, it's a treat to have an exhibit of this quality in Sevilla and we recommend visiting it. You just can't miss it! In the show you can see around one hundred magnificent drawings by Alvaro Siza, exquisitely mounted and in a cordial atmosphere that actually enhances the work of this master. Of all the well known drawings by the Portuguese architect, this exhibit shows Siza's most intimate side: Távora (his teacher), his friends, his family, his pets, self-portraits and the symbolic horses’ drawings, among others. This selection was first shown in Oporto, curated by Carlos Castanheira. Here in Sevilla it has been adapted to the exhibition space and the works have been grouped, underlining the idea of serial drawings under the above mentioned categories. Today thanks to our guide, we've had the chance to understand at first hand how Siza actually draws them, when he does this, what drives him or, for example, how, in a gesture of generosity, he ends up giving them away to his friends. These days, it is a lesson to draw from.
A peculiarity of this exhibit is that it shares its space with the premises of an architecture studio. This has been an interesting approach for the organizers, because it opens up a range of questions regarding contemporary work space, the boundaries of privacy or the work processes and information exchange when designing in architecture.
Another of the opportunities that the show offers is buying its catalogue. It's exquisitely published, and gives the sensation of holding in one's hands one of the original notebooks from which the drawings are normally produced. Quite a treat! Moreover, by acquiring it at a great price, its proceeds go to an association the builds schools in

India

En una reciente presentación, alguien comentó que habíamos contado nuestro proyecto como si aun estuviéramos en el siglo XVIII. Esto es un elogio si miramos a las cuidadas presentaciones de Humphry Repton.

Humpry Repton (1752-1818) fue un paisajista inglés que trabajó para la alta sociedad inglesa, incluso llegó a realizar unos diseños para el Príncipe de Gales. Hoy es conocido por su arte de auto-promocionarse. Solía presentar a los clientes sus diseños bajo la forma de los denominados Red Books (libros rojos), cuyo nombre devienen del color rojo marruecos que usaba en la encuadernación. Ahora es posible admirar 2 de estos bellos libros en la exposición on-line Humphry Repton's Red Books, accesible a través de la página web de The Morgan Library & Museum (New York).

Hemos disfrutado mucho esta exposición on-line y os recomendamos que la visitéis, hay multitud de información y de buenas aplicaciones. ¡No olvidéis de pulsar el botón +on/-off overlay!

Esta historia tiene varios vínculos con nuestras inquietudes: en primer lugar, parte de nuestro trabajo es resolver como hacer una presentación, especialmente en el caso de los concursos donde normalmente tenemos que compilar la complejidad de una propuesta: su concepto, implantación, representación, percepción, construcción, viabilidad, etc. en tan sólo 3 paneles que deben ser visto por un jurado entre un montón de paneles del resto de concursantes (ver las entradas etiquetadas como concursos/competitions). En segundo lugar porque también es un ejemplo de libro-objeto (ver las entradas etiquetadas como libro/book transversal) lo cual ha estado entre nuestros intereses últimamente: la expresión de secuencias espacio-temporales en el contenido de un libro, la interacción material entre libro y lector y el potencial de una lectura no lineal y adireccional siguiendo una narrativa física y subjetiva. Y por último, hemos llegado a esta referencia en el contexto de un nuevo concurso para un jardín, durante el proceso de investigación que acompaña a este tipo de trabajos; para así una vez más expresar nuestras nociones e ideas acerca del paisaje: su materia, el proceso de transformación que conlleva y sus tiempos.
Como valor añadido, hallar estos dos libros de Humpry Repton nos recuerda una vez más la importancia de ser creativo incluso en las circunstancias más adversas.

Humpry Repton (1752-1818) was an English landscape architect. He worked for the English high society, he even worked on some designs for the Prince of Wales. But nowadays he is well known for the art of self-promotion. He used to present his plans and ideas to his clients in the form of Red Books, thus named for their characteristic red morocco bindings. Now, we can look at 2 of those beautiful books at the on-line exhibition Humphry Repton's Red Books at The Morgan Library & Museum (New York) website:

This story establishes several links with our interests: firstly, part of our job is how to prepare presentations, specially in the case of competitions where we have to compile the complexity of a project: its concepts, how it is set in its context, its representation, what it conveys, its construction, its viability, etc. in just 3 flat boards for panel of experts to look at among a pile of other competitors' boards (see the posts labelled under concursos/competitions). Secondly because it is an example of a book object (see all the entries labelled under libro/book transversal) which has been among our latest interests: how to convey space-time sequences in a book's content; the material interaction between book and reader, and the potential of non-linear, a-directional reading within a subjective physical narrative. And finally, we found this link doing some research for an upcoming competition for a garden in which once again we will be expressing our concerns about the matter of contemporary landscape, its transformation processes and transience.
Moreover, finding these two books by Humpry Repton reminds us yet again of the importance of being creative even under the most daunting circumstances.

CASA SAN BARTOLOMÉ DE LA TORRE: MENCIÓN/MENTION XVIII PREMIO DE ARQUITECTURA HUELVA

Hoy, nuestra amiga Manuela nos ha regalado el Catálogo del XVIII Premio de Arquitectura del Colegio de Arquitectos de Huelva / Today, our friend Manuela has given us the Catalogue of the XVIII Architecture Prize of the Colegio de Arquitectos de Huelva

Este catálogo recoge las obras seleccionadas para el premio, entre las que se encuentra la vivienda unifamiliar aislada en San Bartolomé de la Torre (Huelva) proyectada por las arquitectas Tita Jiménez Guijarro, Cinta Román de la Torre y Manuela Peinado Palomero. Este proyecto ha recibido la mención especial del jurado. Lee la noticia completa pinchando aquí. ¡Enhorabuena a este equipo de arquitectas y también al resto de los seleccionados y premiados!

Esta casita, tal y como la presenta en el catálogo la hija de una de las arquitectas, es una sencilla obra de arquitectura cargada de sentimientos, y es más, de buen hacer. Su sencillez sin embargo concentra la compleja fenomenología de la casa y atiende especialmente a la relación de la casa con el paisaje. Y esto resulta grande a pesar de su delicada pequeñez. ¡Enhorabuena de nuevo!

The catalogue compiles the shorlisted works. Among them we can find the House in San Bartolomé de la Torre (Huelva), a project by Tita Jiménez Guijarro, Cinta Román de la Torre and Manuela Peinado Palomero. This project received the honourable mention of the jury. You can read more about it here. Congratulations to these three architects and also to the rest of shorlisted and awarded entries!

This little house, as it is presented in the catalogue by the daughter of one of the architects, is a simple work of architecture full of sentiment, and moreover, wisdom. However its simplicity brings together the complex phenomenology of the house and takes into careful consideration the relationship of the house with the sourrounding landscape. And the result, despite its delicate smallness, is grand. Again, congratulations!

Presentamos el inicio de nuestra reflexión para la II Mesa Redonda Leer y Editar en la Era Digital, que se celebrará el próximo jueves 22 de septiembre.
Here are our first thoughts for the II Mesa Redonda Leer y Editar en la era digital (Reading and Editing in the Digital Age, II Round Table) that will take place next Thursday September 22.

“Materializar un libro es hacer realidad la secuencia espacio-temporal que su contenido expresa”
Ulisses Carrion “The New Art of Making Books”. Kontexts no. 6-7, 1975. Amsterdam

Editar un libro-objeto aún hoy es posible, porque siguen existiendo contenidos que lo requieren o porque mediante un libro-objeto ese mismo contenido adquiere su máxima expresión. En el caso del libro Transversal, que recopila las propuestas que se presentaron al concurso La Transversal de la BIACS, organizado con motivo de la BIACS3-YOUniverse (3ª edición de la Bienal de Arte Contemporáneo de Sevilla), esta opción editorial se hizo más acuciante por la necesidad de trasladar al “espacio-libro” el recorrido urbano que en su conjunto establecieron las cinco intervenciones expuestas durante la celebración de la BIACS3 en cinco “espacios de la ciudad” (las fachadas del ICAS y de la Facultad de Bellas Artes en calle Laraña, y los patios del Colegio de Arquitectos, de EMASESA y de la Facultad de Bellas Artes en calle Gonzalo Bilbao). De ahí que se entienda este libro como otra intervención “transversal” más, esta vez en forma de edición, de esta manera el mensaje final que se propone al lector es el libro en sí, el libro en su totalidad. Un volumen autónomo en el espacio y en el tiempo que indaga en las posibilidades materiales de la edición impresa como variable diferenciadora del papel frente al distinto campo de la publicación digital.

El contenido, en este caso de libro-objeto, al ser muestra de intervenciones en espacios urbano-arquitectónicos, permite liberar al libro de su condición plana. La palabra escrita y las imágenes se equilibran, la reflexión y la muestra dialogan, con lo que adquiere sentido afrontar la edición del libro-objeto como una secuencia espacio-temporal. Podríamos decir que, aún estando profundamente enraizado el libro-objeto en la historia y génesis del libro, aún hoy se distancia del modelo editorial tradicional y se adentra en un campo complementario al de la publicación digital.

Apostar por el libro-objeto en este momento viene de entender que el libro en su formato tradicional (tan en debate), es, en parte, un contenedor accidental de texto, imágenes… Mientras que el libro-objeto no es un contenedor accidental, es contenido en sí mismo. Quizás por ello está llamado a tener un papel en el advenimiento definitivo de la digitalización de contenidos, un eslabón más en la cadena de valor del LIBRO entendido ya esté en todas sus acepciones contemporáneas.

To edit a book-object nowadays is still possible because, on the one hand, contents that require such an option still exist and, on the other, by means of a book-object those contents reach their maximum expression. This is the case of the book Transversal, a compilation of the proposals that were submitted to the competition known as The Transversal of the BIACS, organised within the Biennial of Contemporary Art of Seville, BIACS3-Youniverse. This editorial option became pressing because of the need to put into “book-space” the urban route that the five winning interventions established in five “spaces of the city” (the façades of the ICAS and of the Faculty of Fine Arts on calle Laraña, and the courtyards of the Colegio de Arquitectos, of the headquarters of EMASESA and of the Faculty of Fine Arts on calle Gonzalo Bilbao). It is our understanding that this book is yet another “transversal” intervention, this time in edition form, so that the final message to readers is the book in itself, the book in its totality. The book becomes an autonomous volume in space and time, inquiring into the material possibilities of printed edition as the differentiating variable of paper in contrast with the very different field of digital publications.

In this example of a book-object, the subject matter, a collection of interventions in architectural urban spaces, allows the book to break free from its planar character. Written words and images are balanced while thought and action dialogue, so that it makes sense to tackle the edition of a book-object as a space-time sequence. We could say that even though book-objects have deep roots in the history of print, presently they still hold their distance from the traditional editorial model and penetrate a field that is complementary to digital publications.

A book in its traditional format (at the heart of all debates these days) is, in part, an accidental container of texts, images, etc. By contrast, stakes can still be put in for book-objects by understanding that a book-object is not an accidental container; it is content in itself. Perhaps this is why it will still have a role to play given the final advent of digitalization, as another link in the value chain of the BOOK in all its contemporary forms.

Hoy hemos tenido el placer de recibir el primer número de la nueva etapa de la revista Quaderns/
Today we’ve had the pleasure of receiving the first issue of Quaderns’ new period

La edición de esta nueva etapa está a cargo de José Zabala (Director), junto con Mario Ballesteros y Guillermo López. Este primer número refleja la cuidada edición y el buen trabajo elaborado por el equipo de redacción.

La revista tiene un formato de cuaderno, tal y como anotan en la presentación en la que desgranan la estructura que seguirán los números: Ensayo visual, Agenda, 1 sobre 3, Archivo, 3 sobre 1, Invitado y Observatorio. Una serie de interesantes secciones que se complementan entre si, y que indagan en el hecho de las posibilidades de la edición en papel de la difusión de conocimiento arquitectónico. Como complemento a esta edición en papel, en las distintas secciones aparecen códigos vinculados con el blog Quaderns (un apéndice digital para cada número impreso de Quaderns, pero también una plataforma editorial complementaria) donde se amplia la información de la edición impresa. Con todo ello, se subraya la importancia de la revista colegial como herramienta con capacidad para el fomento y generación de la cultura e investigación arquitectónica.Encontramos un sutil balance entre los contenidos de este número, y un apreciable gusto en su materialidad. En su conjunto, nos hace disfrutar como lectores.

En estos tiempos difíciles en los que en otros casos las revistas colegiales pasan por momentos críticos dado el negativo impacto que están produciendo sobre su continuidad e incluso supervivencia las políticas económicas y culturales de los colegios, valoramos enormemente el esfuerzo por el trabajo realizado. Un trabajo en el que se ha sabido reconocer el potencial de los recursos personales, económicos y técnicos (materiales y virtuales) disponibles para generar un producto de altísima calidad material e intelectual. Un trabajo que, en sí y extrapolándolo al campo profesional general, desvela una vez más nuestro papel crucial como agentes creativos capaces de generar los mejores lugares —en el sentido más amplio de la palabra, considerando por lo tanto las revistas como “lugares” de debate, exposición y reflexión— para el desarrollo de nuestras sociedades.

The magazine’s new phase is headed by José Zabala, with Mario Ballesteros and Guillermo López. Their first issue shows how carefully edited it is as well the good work carried out by the entire team. The magazine has the format of a notebook, as they describe it themselves in its opening pages, in which they also explain the structure that the issues will follow: Visual Essay, Agenda, 1x3, Archive, 3x1, Guest and Observatory. This series of interesting parts are complementary to one another and become the tools with which to look into the different possibilities that editing using a paper format allows to enable the spreading of architectural knowledge. As a complement to the paper edition, throughout the different sections a series of codes appear linked to Quaderns’ blog (a digital appendix to each printed issue of Quaderns, but also a complimentary, expanded editorial platform), where the information of the printed issue is expanded. All in all, the importance of this kind of institutional magazines as tools capable of encouraging and generating architectural culture and research is underlined.

In our opinion the contents of this issue are carefully balanced, and we appreciate its materiality. As a whole, it’s a joy to read.

During these difficult times in which, in other cases, the situation of these magazines is critical due to the negative impact that the economic and cultural policies of their mother institutions is having on their continuity and even their survival, we greatly appreciate the enormous effort that this work entails. The work carried out shows the editors’ awareness in recognizing the potential of the personal, economic and technical (both material and virtual) resources available in order to generate a product of high material and intellectual quality. A way of working that, in itself and applying it to the general architectural field, reveals once again the key role architects have as creative agents capable of generating the best places –in the broadest sense of the term, thus considering magazines “places” to debate, show and think- for our societies’ development.

OLIVAREROS INAUGURADO / OLIVAREROS INAUGURATED

El pasado míércoles 23 de marzo de 2011, quedó abierto al público el espacio socio-educativo Los Olivareros. Last Wednesday March 23, 2011 Los Olivareros educational and social center was opened to the public.

Despúes de haber ganado el concurso para llevarlo a cabo en enero de 2009, haber redactado el proyecto completo correspondiente en los meses de febrero y marzo de ese mismo año, haberse iniciado la obra en septiembre de 2009 y finalizado en septiembre de 2010, fue un placer para nosotros estar presentes en la inauguración y entrega del edificio para el uso proyectado. Incluso durante el acto y la posterior fiesta que hubo, empezamos a ver cómo los espacios y elementos que pensamos y materializamos empezaban a ser usados, algunos tal y como se preveía, otros de manera inesperada.
Para nosotros la experiencia de llevar a cabo este proyecto significa no sólo materializar las reflexiones de partida sobre su ubicación y emplazamiento, o lo que siginifica un uso intergeneracionalmente compartido, o la comunicación al exterior de la conjunción de programas por el apilamiento de volúmenes o el uso de un rótulo luminoso (reflexiones ya hechas en anteriores posts y que podéis leer en su conjunto en nuestra web en la sección "Trabajos-proyectos y obras", o en la etiqueta olivareros), sino también atender a la lógica impuesta por la premura del proceso, con la incorporación y coordinación de otros equipos de trabajo, con sus aciertos y dificultades. Seguiremos aprendiendo.

After winning the competition to design it in January 2009, writing up the full blown project design during the months of February and March of that year, having begun construction in September 2009 and finished in September 2010, it was our pleasure to be present at the opening and handing over of the building for the public use it was designed for. Even during the ceremony and the little celebration that took place afterwards we already began to see how the spaces and elements we laid out were beginning to be used, some as expected and others surprisingly so. For us, the experience of carrying out this project goes beyond materializing our first thoughts about its location and position, or what an intergenerational use entails, or how to externalize the grouping of programs by piling up volumes or using a luminous sign (thoughts we've talked about on previous posts and you can read about on our website under the section "Works-projects and built work", or under the label olivareros in this blog) but also to understand the rationality of its construction given the necessary speed with which it needed to be built as well as the incorporation and later coordination of other teams and agents, with its successes and difficulties. We shall continue learning.

Nuestra propuesta ICHI ha obtenido una mención en el Concurso de Ideas para el Parque Ca n'Escandell, Eivissa/
Our entry ICHI has received a special mention in the Ideas Competition for the design of Ca n'Escandell Park in Eivissa (Ibiza), Spain

De un total de 72 propuestas presentadas, hemos obtenido una de las 5 menciones. El concurso público de ideas fue convocado por Sepes, Entidad Estatal de Suelo adscrita al Ministerio de Fomento, y el Ayuntamiento de Eivissa. Nuestra propuesta aparece publicada junto con la ganadora, los tres accesits y el resto de menciones en la web de SEPES. Además todas las propuestas presentadas están expuestas en el claustro del Ayuntamiento de Eivissa. ¡Enhorabuena a los ganadores!

El Acta del Jurado incluye una serie de comentarios sobre las 9 propuestas premiadas. Acerca de nuestro trabajo el jurado ha dicho: "ICHI, por la sensibilidad en la aplicación de una trama arbórea que homogeniza y unifica los diferentes usos del ámbito."

Nos animan estas palabras del jurado sobre nuestra propuesta, porque compartimos en líneas generales su lectura sintética y por el hecho de que exista un análisis del jurado, y éste se nos haga llegar a nosotros y al público, lo cual, tras haber participado en ya una cierta cantidad de concursos, es una agradable novedad. Por un lado es enriquecedor recibir los comentarios “de vuelta” de compañeros profesionales por lo que significan en cuanto a crítica y al grado de comprensión de lo que presentamos, lo cual nos permite seguir abriendo vías de auto-reflexión sobre las presentaciones que están por venir. Por otro, la plasmación de la valoración de una propuesta revela el respeto y comprensión hacia nuestro trabajo que tiene el jurado ante el esfuerzo que significa la presentación de una idea, incluso cuando no es la ganadora. Esperamos que se extienda esta costumbre entre los jurados.

Of a total of 72 proposals, we've been awarded one of the five special mentions. The ideas competition was organised by Sepes, an agency part of the Ministerio de Fomento (Spanish Ministry of Public Works), and the Ibiza City Council. Our porposal is published along with the winner, runners-up and the other special mentions on the SEPES website. Besides this, all of the proposals presented will be exhibited at the Ibiza Town Hall. Our congratulations to the winners!

The jury's report includes commentaries on the 9 awarded proposals. As for our proposal it says: "ICHI, for its sensitivity in establishing a tree layout that homogenises and unifies the different uses of the area".

The comment made by the jury about our proposal cheers us on, not only because in general terms we share its synthetic analysis, but more importantly because this analysis actually exists and has been made availale to us and the general public, which is something agreeably new to us after having participated in a considerable number of competitions. On the one hand, to receive feedback from professional colleagues is enriching from a critical point of view and it allows us to see to what degree we got our idea accross; this opens up a range of thoughts within our practice for presentations to come. On the other hand, the communication of a proposal's assesment shows a jury's degree of respect and comprehension towards our work, given the effort the submission of an idea entails, even when it's not a winning one. We hope this becomes a custom among juries.

Vive en Madrid y quiere conseguir un deseo: reunir 1.000 grullas para enviar todo el ánimo posible a toda su gente, necesitada de ayuda tras el terremoto del 11 de marzo. / Makiko is Japanese. She lives in Madrid and she wants a wish to come true: to collect 1.000 cranes to send all possible support to her people in need help after the March 11th earthquake.

Esta mañana derivando por Internet casualmente hemos conocido "las 1000 grullas", un proyecto de Makiko Sese. En el difícil momento que está viviendo el pueblo japonés y entre la dureza de la situación, nos ha parecido muy conmovedor y bello su deseo. Hemos hecho 1 grulla de origami para ella y se la hemos mandado para que haga llegar todo nuestro ánimo a Japón.
This morning, casually surfing the Internet, we found "las 1000 grullas", a project by Makiko Sese. During these days of hardship for the Japanese people and given the added difficulty of the situation, we think her wish is very touching and beautiful . We have made 1 origami crane and sent it to her so that she can express all of our support to Japan.

Mediomundo nos invitó a conocer el recién acabado Cibercentro Macarena / Mediomundo invited us to visit their recently finished Cibercentro Macarena

El Cibercentro está en Macarena Tres Huertas, Sevilla. Aunque es un barrio relativamente cercano al centro, nunca antes habíamos estado allí. Este edificio se localiza en un entorno producto de la periferia especulativa del desarrollismo español, donde conviven bloques residenciales, algunas naves, espacios libres indefinidos y el tráfico de varias arterias principales de la zona. En los últimos años se ha estado trabajando en Sevilla por mejorar la cualidad de los espacios públicos de estos barrios, reurbanizándolos y reequipando sus lugares infrautilizados, produciendo momentos de cierta urbanidad — pasamos un rato inolvidable en un bar de barrio (¡gracias amigos!)— que llevan al surgimiento de nuevos programas, como este cibercentro.

En "un rincón" entre edificios plurifamiliares de ocho plantas y junto a unas pistas deportivas se encuentra el Cibercentro. Tras sortear varías vallas de las distintas comunidades de vecinos (¿por qué en Sevilla hay tanto deseo por vallar y delimitar?), cualquier camino que tomes te llevará al edificio, pues a pesar de su "arrinconada" posición su implantación hace que se ofrezca como punto de encuentro. (Aunque hemos sabido que siguiendo el afán delimitador sevillano, la propiedad ha encargado que el centro también se valle y no sabemos si esto alterará la interesante libertad de acceso que tiene el edificio.)

El vistoso edificio de color rojo es básico en su contenido y rico en su espacialidad: aulas de informática, talleres, salas de reuniones y una pequeña cantina se conjugan con la experiencia del espacio libre. En nuestro recorrido transitamos "el jardín posible" y esperamos en los porches de entrada, pasamos por el transparente vestíbulo y subimos por las escaleras, atravesamos las estancias que se dividen con puertas ocultas, y llegamos a la azotea que se ofrece como terraza para eventos y mirador al río (descubriéndose la antigua relación de este barrio con el Guadalquivir antes de que las obras del 92 y una nueva oleada especulativa la cercenara), en la que además podemos simplemente estar sentados en su largo banco que recorre todo el perímetro.

La fluidez con la que se llega al cibercentro y con la que se experimenta, nos habla del potencial que tiene el uso creativo de herramientas propias de la arquitectura (el trabajo de la sección, la secuencia, la implantación, la distribución, el detalle, la materialidad, incluso la gestión de unos ajustados recursos económicos) para proponer espacios generosos y con capacidad de ser activados con facilidad. Es posible visualizar que su puesta en uso irá más allá de ser meros cuartos para conectarse a Internet, para llegar a ser un lugar en el que los habitantes del barrio “se conecten” entre sí en un espacio compartido.

The building is in the Macarena Tres Huertas neighborhood of Sevilla. Even though it is relatively close to the city center, we had never been to this part of town before. The surroundings are a product of 60s speculative growth, in which residential high rises coexist with industrial buildings, undefined open space and major traffic ways. In the last few years an effort has been made in Sevilla to improve the public space of these neighborhoods, revamping their urban infrastructure and re-equiping their underused places. This has produced a certain resurgence of urbanity (we had a great time at a local bar, thanks guys!) which has brought about the appearance of new uses, such as this cybercenter.

The cybercenter is placed on a corner lot, among eight storey housing blocks and next to some playing fields. After skirting various fences belonging to the different housing estates (why is there such need in Sevilla to fence up and set limits?) any path taken leads you to the building. Regardless of its “cornered” position, the way the architects have placed it have turnned it into a meeting point. (We have later found out, following the aforementioned zeal to delimit, that the building managers are having a fence put up, the consequences of which are unknown to us as far as the approach to the building is concerned.)

The flashy red building is simple in its contents and spatially rich: computer labs, workrooms, meeting rooms and a small canteen merge with the experience of the public space. During our visit, the promenade took us through “the garden that is possible” and we waited under the entry porches, we entered the transparent vestibule and climbed the ample staircase, we passed through rooms that can be divided up with doors that otherwise remain hidden and we reached the roof terrace which offers its space for outdoor events and a viewpoint towards the river (thus revealing the neighbourhood’s former relationship with the Guadalquivir before the public works of 1992 and yet another speculative development cut it off), as well as serving a simple seating area thanks to the bench that covers its perimeter.

The fluidity with which one approaches de cybercenter and the way it is experienced, speak of the potential that the creative use of architecture’s own tools (working with sections, with sequences, setting, layout, detail, materiality and even the management of a tight budget so) to propose generous spaces that are capable of being easily activated. It’s not difficult to visualize that once it is put into use its program will go beyond merely being rooms to connect to the Internet, to become a place in with the neighbourhood’s inhabitants “connect” among themselves in a shared space.

Es un pequeño objeto que nos ha regalado el estudio de diseño BUENOS DÍAS, para comenzar el año 2011. Según la presentación, "se trata de un calendario, en el que hemos estudiado los cambios de luz que se producen durante el año, a lo largo del día, en intervalos de veinte minutos. Queríamos obtener un paisaje del cielo sevillano en el tiempo que transcurre a lo largo del año". ¡Y lo han obtenido! La pequeña edición es una exquisitez visual y material. ¡Gracias!

It's a small object that the designers BUENOS DÍAS, have given us to begin the year 2011. According to the presentation, "it's a calendar, in which we have studied the changes in light that occur during the year, throughout the day, in twenty minute intervals. We wanted to come up with a landscape of the sky of Sevilla in the time interval of an entire year". And they've done it! This small book is visually and materially exquisite. Thank you!

A bench story / Historia de un banco

It must have been 1990 or 1991 when one fine day a bunch of furniture appeared in the patio of my family house in Utrera. Apparently, my mother had gone to buy olive oil directly from the processing factory and had returned not only with the oil, but with this pile of stuff she’d noticed haphazardly strewn about the factory premises. Among it all there were three long wood benches, their length fitting perfectly with that of our long Edwardian dinning table (the table is a whole other story). To this day, two of those benches are still in use at that table. At the factory, the benches had been used by “fabricantas”—the name given in the town to the women who worked for the local olive industry—during their rest stops or even while actually selecting, rinsing, pitting or dressing table olives.

Kauh’s “Los Olivareros” project sits on the site where that factory used to stand, and it was just a matter of time before we ended up designing some benches for the building. And those benches names just had to be “Olivia G”, “Olivia M” and “Fabricanta”. “Fabricanta” is a take on my parents’ benches. It’s just about as long, but its seat is wider and made up of multiple boards instead of just one long plank; given its hidden steel structure, it doesn’t need the wood bracings the original benches had. “Olivia G” is even longer than “Fabricanta” and it curls up to embrace space and its users. “Olivia M” would fit into the space that “Olivia G” seems to want to hold tight, while “Olivia M” imagines its users sprawling all over the place. In a couple of month’s time we shall see how this new family of benches fares.

Debía rondar 1990 o 1991 cuando un buen día un montón de muebles apareció en el patio de la casa de mi familia en Utrera. Al parecer, mi madre había ido a comprar aceite de oliva directamente a la fábrica y había vuelto no sólo con el aceite, sino con ese conjunto de chismes que había visto desperdigados por el recinto fabril. Entre todos ellos se encontraban tres largos bancos de madera cuya longitud encajaba a la perfección con la de nuestra larga mesa de comedor de estilo eduardiano (pero la mesa es otra historia). A día de hoy, dos de aquellos bancos siguen en uso alrededor de esa mesa. En la fábrica los bancos habían sido usados por las “fabricantas” —el nombre que recibían las mujeres que trabajaban en la industria aceitunera local— durante los descansos e incluso durante la selección, lavado, deshuesado o aliñado de las aceitunas de mesa.

El proyecto “Los Olivareros” de kauh se encuentra en parte del solar sobre el cual se hallaba la fábrica, y era simplemente una cuestión de tiempo acabar diseñando unos bancos para el edificio. Y sus nombres tenían que ser “Olivia G”, “Olivia M” y “Fabricanta”. “Fabricanta” está inspirado en los bancos de mis padres, tiene casi la misma longitud, aunque su asiento es más ancho y está compuesto por múltiples tablillas en vez de un solo tablón largo. Dada su estructura de acero oculta, no son necesarios los arriostramientos en madera que tienen los originales. “Olivia G” tiene una longitud incluso mayor que “Fabricanta” para poder enroscarse y abrazar el espacio y a los usuarios. “Olivia M” podría caber en el espacio que al parecer “Olivia G” quiere sujetar con fuerza, solo que “Olivia M” imagina a sus usuarios desparramados por todas partes. En un par de meses veremos cómo le va a esta nueva familia de bancos.

Meteocaravaca tiene como finalidad informar acerca del tiempo local. La ubicación de la webcam en una de las edificaciones colindantes permite tener una vista parcial del conjunto, a veces la cámara se rota y ofrece una panorámica completa. ¡Esta tecnología nos hubiera sido de ayuda a la hora del seguimiento de ciertas fases de una obra a 500 kilometros de distancia de nuestro estudio!
Meteocaravaca is a service that gives information about the local weather. Its webcam is located on a building that is near the pools and allows a partial view of them. Sometimes the webcam turns and offers a panoramic view of the project. This technology would have been of use to follow certain phases the construction process of a project that is 500 km away from our office!

Los significados del rojo / The meanings of red

Utreranos celebran el éxito de La Roja en la Copa del Mundo 2010 en la rotonda de Fernanda y Bernarda / People form Utrera celebrate La Roja’s World Cup 2010 success at the Fernanda and Bernarda roundabout

Hace cinco años concluimos esta peculiar intervención, nuestra primera obra construida. Convertimos en ilusión de jardín una rotonda en la que había que insertar una escultura figurativa preexistente a las cantaoras Fernanda y Bernarda, y transformamos en una pequeña plaza el ensanchamiento de una acera. Con el uso de macetas y otras piezas cerámicas vidriadas, piedra natural, vegetación, estucos y pinturas teñimos el ambiente de color rojo.

En aquel momento empezamos a investigar el uso de cierto cromatismo como variable de proyecto para el espacio público del Sur, y en este caso el uso del color rojo se hacía por ser un color tradicional del espacio doméstico local que nos interesaba llevar a la escala urbana, que funcionaba además como un homenaje al flamenco (uno de los colores de la pasión y la tragedia) y conectaba con la cultura del coche (el ideal de un Ferrari, las señales de tráfico).

Parece que los ciudadanos de Utrera le buscaron otro significado al color rojo aquella fantástica noche del 11 de julio de 2010, un significado quizás más pasajero, y por ello también quizás más contemporáneo.

Five years ago we finished this peculiar design, our first built project. We turned a roundabout, in which given figurative sculpture to honor the flamenco singers Fernanda and Bernarda had to be inserted, into the illusion of a garden, and we transformed the widening of a sidewalk into a small plaza. With the use of pots and other ceramic pieces, natural stone, vegetation, stucco and paint we tinted the atmosphere the color red.

Back then we began to research the use of certain chromatics as a design variable applied to public space in southern Spain. In this case the use of the color red was due to our interest in applying to the urban scale a color used traditionally in local domestic spaces. It also payed homage to flamenco (one of the colors of passion and tragedy) and is connected to car culture (Ferrari as an ideal; the color of traffic signs).

It seems as if the citizens of Utrera found another meaning for the color red that unforgettable night of july 11 2010, perhaps of more passing significance, and thus perhaps a more contemporary one given the exceptional circumstances of the day.

La semana pasada asistimos a la colocación del rótulo luminoso con el nombre del edificio: olivareros, espacio socio-educativo / Last week we attended the setting up of the luminous sign with the name of the building: olivareros, espacio socio-educativo

"Los Olivareros" era el nombre de la fábrica de aceitunas que existió en ese lugar. Hace aproximadamente una década se recalificaron estos terrenos, la fábrica se trasladó, el complejo fabril fue desmontado y se proyectó una barriada residencial. Una transformación urbana alentada por la cercanía al centro de la ciudad y los nuevos requisitos funcionales de este tipo de industrias. En este momento la situación transitoria es un paisaje suburbano fragmentado, en el que conviven viviendas adosadas, un espacio libre sin cualificar que no llega a ser público por su desuso y algunas arquitecturas industriales que aún perviven: los silos, una chimenea o unas naves municipales. Es en el margen donde el planeamiento prevé en hilera tres equipamientos; este edificio además de una guardería y una iglesia evangélica. El espacio socio-educativo es un apilamiento de tres grandes contenedores que en parte toman su materialidad y sistemas constructivos de las naves y almacenes actuales. Así decidimos rescatar la memoria industrial del lugar para aportar complejidad y, por qué no decirlo, confusión al entorno. Complejidad porque participa de la fragmentación urbana y confusión porque cuestiona la homogeneización que propone este planeamiento.

“Espacio socio-educativo” es el programa del edificio. Aglutina usos muy populares entre los ciudadanos de la localidad: salas de estudios y aulas con sus correspondientes espacios de sociabilidad, y provocará la afluencia de usuarios "no residenciales" de la barriada. Así, esperamos que el edificio colabore en aportar intensidad urbana a este entorno hasta ahora poco potenciado: que al menos aparezca algún quiosco o café, que se reúna algún grupo de estudiantes en los bancos del parque, que el autobús urbano pare en la puerta, etc.

Los Olivareros was the name of the olive processing factory that once existed in this place. Around a decade ago a change in land-use occurred, the industry moved, the factory complex was dismantled and a residential neighbourhood was planned. This transformation was pushed by its proximity to the center of town and the changing needs of this type of industry. The current situation is that of a fragmented suburban landscape in which terraced houses, an open space (which is not quite public because it is underused) and some industrial architectures that still persist (the silos, a smokestack and municipal storage facilities) all coexist. It is on the edges of this area where a row of three public facilities has been planned; this building, along with a day care center and an evangelical church. This social and educational space is the result of piling up three container-like volumes that, in part, take up their materiality and construction technique from current storage and industrial warehouses. We decided to rescue the industrial trait of the place to add complexity and, why not say it, confusion to the setting. Complexity because the building takes part in the urban fragmentation, and confusion because it puts into question the homogenization that urban planning strives for.

“Social-educational space” is the building’s program. It agglutinates uses that are very popular among the town’s residents: study halls and classrooms with their corresponding sociable spaces, inciting the influx of “non residential” users to the neighbourhood. We hope the building will help introduce a certain urban vibrancy to a setting which clearly lacks of it; that at least a small coffee shop or kiosk will spring up, that a group of students will get together on one of the park’s benches, or that the bus will stop at the facility’s door.

Esta visita la realizamos junto con los familiares, socios y miembros de la Junta directiva de la asociación, la diputada y técnicos del Área de Infraestructuras y Obras de la Diputación de Cádiz, y varios concejales del Ayuntamiento de Conil. / The visit took place along with relatives of the patients, members of the association's board of directors, politicians and technitians of the Diputacion de Cádiz and some of the city council members.

Breve descripción del proyecto / Short brief of the project:

Este Centro de Día para enfermos de Alzheimer, con capacidad para 60 usuarios, surge de la colaboración de la Asociación AFA-Conil y la Diputación de Cádiz. Los condicionantes de partida son un programa dependiente de la normativa tipológica y de la experiencia de la asociación, un presupuesto muy ajustado y la previsión de su construcción por fases a través de programas de empleo que condiciona las soluciones constructivas. Como reto creativo colaboramos muy cercanos a todas las partes para encontrar colectivamente las soluciones óptimas. La propuesta es una "casa" en torno a los espacios de convivencia: las salas de estar, los patios y el comedor; que se expande a zonas exteriores de esparcimiento y actividad. / This Day Care Center for people with Alzheimer's disease, for 60 patients, is a collaboration between the Asociación AFA-Conil and the Diputación de Cádiz. The starting points for this proposal are a project brief that depends on the strict outlines of the building's technical requirements as well as the association's own experience, a tight budget and the phasing of its construction, managed through public employment programs, all of which infuences the construction methods used. The creative challenge is to work closely along with all those involved in search of the optimum solutions. The proposal is a "house" built around its communal spaces: living rooms, patios and dinning room all of which expand outdoors towards the active recreational grounds.

Hoy hemos asistido a la presentación del libro Transversal editado por el Centro de Iniciativas Culturales de la Universidad de Sevilla (CICUS) y con la colaboración del Instituto de la Cultura y las Artes de Sevilla (ICAS).

Este libro recopila las propuestas que se presentaron al concurso La Transversal de la BIACS, el cual fue organizado con motivo de la BIACS3-YOUniverse (3 edición de la Bienal de Arte Contemporáneo de Sevilla).
Nuestra relación con este libro tiene una doble vertiente: por un lado aparece publicada nuestra propuesta Jardin Cent que resultó finalista en dicho concurso, y por otro nuestra participación en la edición del libro, ya que hemos estado a cargo de la idea editorial y la coordinación del proceso.
La apuesta ha sido la de editar un libro-objeto que indaga en las posibilidades materiales de la edición impresa. Encontramos atractivo explotar esta variable diferenciadora del papel frente al incipiente y distinto campo de la publicación digital.
El libro traslada a su estructura el recorrido urbano de intervenciones que en su conjunto establecieron las cinco propuestas expuestas durante la celebración de la BIACS3 en cinco espacios de la ciudad (las fachadas del ICAS y de la Facultad de Bellas Artes en calle Laraña, y los patios del Colegio de Arquitectos, de EMASESA y de la Facultad de Bellas Artes en calle Gonzalo Bilbao). Un itinerario que seguía la traza del eje oeste-este que atraviesa el casco histórico de Sevilla. Los capítulos se organizan como lugares de reflexión, donde se muestra la capacidad de transformación de estos espacios cotidianos, exponiendo tanto lo que fueron, extraordinariamente, durante sesenta y cinco días, como lo que pudieron haber sido. Además de las propuestas se ha podido contar con tres miradas transversales al conjunto de propuestas ganadoras realizadas por tres miembros del jurado: María Teresa Carrasco, Juan Suárez Ávila y Carlos Tapia Martín.
En el proceso, hemos tenido el placer de trabajar junto a Buenos días, proyectos para el entorno en la elaboración del diseño y junto a Anna Zoltowska a cargo de la traducción, además de contar con un maravilloso equipo técnico a cargo de las revisiones de estilo y el ajuste de las imágenes, y con el preciso trabajo de impresión de Imprenta Luque.
Este libro ha sido posible gracias al CICUS, queremos agradecer su apoyo al proyecto y su confianza en nuestro trabajo.

Today we have attended to the presentation of the book Transversal edited by the Centre for Cultural Initiatives of the University of Seville (CICUS) with the collaboration of the Institute for Culture and the Arts fo Seville (ICAS).

The book compiles the proposals that were submitted to the competition known as The Transversal of the BIACS, which was organised within the Biennial of Contemporary Art of Seville, BIACS3-Youniverse.
We have a double connection with this book. On the one hand, our proposal Cent Garden, which was a finalist in the competition, is published. On the other we participated in the actual editing of the book, we were in charge of the editorial concept and coordinated the entire process of its making.
The challenge was to edit a book-object that inquires into the material possibilities of printed edition. We found paper an attractive differentiating variable in contrast with the very different and incipient field of digital publications.
The book incorporates into its structure the urban route that the five winning interventions established in five locations of the city (the façades of the ICAS and of the Faculty of Fine Arts on calle Laraña, and the courtyards of the Architect's Institute of Seville, of the headquartes of EMASESA and of the Faculty of Fine Arts on calle Gonzalo Bilbao) during the celebration of the BIACS3. This itinerary followed the line of the West-East axis which crosses historic centre of Seville. The chapters are organised as spaces for reflection, in which the capacity of transformation of each of these everyday locations can be seen, showing what they became, in an extraordinary way, for sixty five days, as well as what they could have been. Besides showing all the proposals, in the book there have been included three transversal looks taken at the group of winning proposals by three of the members of the competition's jury: María Teresa Carrasco, Juan Suárez Ávila and Carlos Tapia Martín.
Throughout the process of making this book it has been our pleasure to work along with Buenos días, proyectos para el entorno as designers, Anna Zoltowska as the translator, a great technical team in charge of text and image editing, as well as the printing and binding precision work of Imprenta Luque.The book has been made possible thanks to the trust CICUS put in our work and the support received from them for this project.

Tiempos: la obra avanza / Timings: the building is under construction

Por nuestra corta experiencia y los comentarios de compañeros, el tiempo que suele transcurrir entre un concurso ganado, el encargo del proyecto, su redacción y revisiones, el proceso de licitación y el desarrollo de la obra en sí, se dilata y pasan bastantes años. En este caso, enmarcado en el Plan E, hace apenas un año ganábamos el concurso, en el mes posterior se entregó el proyecto y ahora las obras avanzan a buen ritmo. Sin embargo en otro proyecto para este mismo proceso pasaron seis años. La gestión del tiempo y cómo influye en el proyecto, para nosotros, forma parte del reto creativo.

Our short experience and the comments of our colleagues, tell us that the time that goes by between the moment a competition is won, the project is commissioned, it is written up, it is revised, the bidding process takes place and it is built, often stretches and several years go by. In this case, within the context of the Plan E, it was barely a year ago when we won the competition, within a month we had drawn up the project and now construction is well under way. However for another project this same process lasted six years. For us, time management and how it influences the project is part of the creative challenge.

El programa propuesto se apila (sala de estudio municipal y aulas, usos que conllevan altos grados de sociabilidad). Un vestíbulo vertical producto de la “destrucción Matta-Clarkiana” de forjados y huecos interconecta las plantas, a la vez que éstas se desplazan entre sí generando espacios exteriores en todos los niveles… / We pile up the uses given in the project brief (a large study hall for students of all ages and a series of classrooms, uses accompanied by high levels of sociability). A vertical lobby, the product of the “destruction” of the floor slabs and openings in a Gordon Matta-Clark manner, interconnects the different levels, while these slip against each other generating outdoor spaces at different elevations…

Las Hoyas / The Hollows

Almería cuenta con dos Hoyas: la Nueva y la Vieja; nuestra propuesta produce el paulatino desvelado de una más para la ciudad, la “Hoya-Plaza”

El Parque de La Hoya se sitúa en un entorno de gran riqueza patrimonial, cultural y natural, en el borde urbano del casco histórico, en contacto con el paisaje y contiguo a la zona monumental y turística. Nuestra propuesta suma a la revitalización de la Hoya el paulatino desvelado de una nueva Hoya: la “Hoya-Plaza”. La Hoya-Plaza asume su condición de pieza urbana clave como espacio público conector del sistema de espacios libres y monumentales de este entorno: Hoya Nueva, Hoya Vieja, Alcazaba, Centro Histórico y Cerro San Cristóbal. La propuesta en su conjunto visibiliza los valores ambientales e incorpora los elementos patrimoniales, con el objetivo de generar un parque urbano contemporáneo que será un lugar abierto para las actividades ciudadanas.
Se propone una actuación por fases. La intervención, especialmente sobre el borde urbano, se entiende como un proceso de crecimiento lento, cuidadoso e informado del parque. Como si de una sucesión ecológica se tratara, cada etapa aportará complejidad y diversidad, para ir construyendo este nuevo espacio colectivo de manera sostenible.
Ubicado en el contacto entre la Hoya Vieja y la Hoya Plaza y al pie de la Alcazaba, el Centro de Interpretación es un edificio-paisaje que registra las diversas cotas topográficas para hacer de la Hoya un espacio permeable y accesible. Intensifica la relación que tiene el parque con lo urbano, tanto a nivel físico como ciudadano, proponiendo en su crecimiento la conexión a través de un ascensor con la Torre del Saliente.
En el singular espacio cóncavo de La Hoya se propone la regeneración ambiental siguiendo las pautas del paisaje inteligente o Xeriscape, y la puesta en valor de las futuras excavaciones arqueológicas. Asimismo, se apuesta por la recuperación parcial de la memoria del paisaje antropizado. Con todo, se establecen mecanismos espaciales y de uso para generar nuevas y diversas formas de apropiación.

La Hoya Park [Park of the Hollow] is located in a setting of great historical, cultural and natural wealth. It is on the urban edge of the historic quarter, in contact with the landscape and beside the city’s monumental area and tourist attractions. Beyond the revitalisation of the Hoya, our proposal gradually reveals a new hollow; the “Hoya-Plaza”. The Hoya-Plaza takes on its role as a key urban element and becomes the public space that interconnects the system of open spaces and monuments: the New Hoya, the Old Hoya, the Alcazaba, the Historic Quarter and the Hill of San Cristobal. As a whole, the proposal brings to light the environmental values of the area and incorporates elements of the city’s heritage with the goal of generating a contemporary urban park that will become an open place for civic activities.
The project will be carried out in different stages. The intervention, especially regarding the urban edge, is understood as the process of slow, careful and informed growth of the park. Just as if it were a natural, ecological succession, each phase will incorporate complexity and diversity in order to build this new collective space in a sustainable manner.
Placed at the foot of the Alcazaba, in the contact zone between the Old Hoya and the Hoya-Plaza, the Visitor Center is a landscape-building that touches upon the different topographic elevations so as to make the Hoya permeable and accessible. The building intensifies the relationship between the park and the city, both at a physical and at a social level, and proposes, as part of the process of its own growth, a connection with one of the Alcazaba’s towers, la Torre del Saliente, by means of an elevator.
Within the remarkable concave space of the Hollow, the proposed environmental regeneration is based on the outlines set out by intelligent landscaping, or xeriscape, as well as on the incorporation of the archaeological remains that are likely to appear. Likewise, an effort is made to recover the historic man-made landscape elements of the site. All in all, the necessary spatial and programmatic mechanisms are created to produce new and diverse forms of civic appropriation.
