We have always thought that architecture, from its own perspective, through ephemera, can sometimes indulge itself and flirt with the realm of the arts, thus becoming lighter—shaking its discipline off, at least in part, without losing any of its professional rigor—having a little fun, and even, becoming irreverent and somewhat mischievous. This field of work, one we consider mainly a space for reflection, has been present intermittently, by constantly, since kauh's beginnings. Briefly, let's go over some the temporary interventions we have proposed over the years.

2004 - Intervención en Passeig Bernardí Martorell / Intervention in the Passeig Bernardí Martorell. Barcelona. Concurso Racons Public. FAD. (Seleccionada / Selected)

This was one of our first-ever competition entries. It was for one of the first editions of this ongoing competition series for interventions in a variety of public spaces of the city of Barcelona. That year, one of the passageways of the Raval was chosen. There, we imagined an almost surrealist installation: six, extremely tall palm trees that would be flown in by helicopter, a lit ladder, a flat fish tank...It was a celebration of tall-and-narrowness, the creation of a festive place, an interruption of the everyday.

2006 - Medianesperia. Almería. Concurso Transite.

Transite was a competition series held in the mid 2000s. It aimed at producing temporary interventions in certain public spaces of the capital cities of the eight Andalusian provinces. In 2006, we participated in the call for the city of Almería. For that edition, the intervention had to take place on a huge and very visible party wall of a building on the square at the end of the Obispo Orbera Rambla. Our response was to place a false, monumental mirror that, during the day, would reflect the atmosphere and everyday life of the city, while at night, it would become a screen upon which what was happening on the square bellow was projected, as well as what was going on at the other, seven locations throughout Andalusia. Once again, our approach was festive, but this time foreign features weren't the precursors of this celebration: the point was to turn the everyday atmosphere of a town into something extraordinary and to underline the collective nature of the unique events that were taking place, at the same time, in the eight cities.

2008 - Jardín Cent / Cent Garden. Sevilla/Barcelona. Concurso Transversal de la BIACS-YOUniverse. CAAC - Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo, Universidad de Sevilla, ICAS - Instituto. (Finalista / finalist) // 2009 - Barcelona, Festival EME3.

BIACS was the Contemporary Art Bienal that was held in Seville for several years. The Transversal competition took place during its third (and for now, last) edition, and it proposed intervening on a series of facades and courtyards belonging to institutional buildings in the center of town. We answered the call for the courtyard of the Colegio de Arquitectos, in the plaza de San Pedro, a space one always has to pass through in order to enter the building. Our reaction was somewhat irreverent and provocative: we wanted to turn the entire budget allocated to the intervention into euro cent coins and pave the courtyard with this new material. It was zen garden in which gravel became coins and stones became golden piggy banks... Once the installation was dismantled, the money could be used for something else, or even returned. Even though our proposal was not chosen, the Cent Garden lived on. We still have the desktop prototype we made for the PECHAKUCHA Sevilla BIACS special edition. We were also able to create a larger prototype for EME3 at the Centro de Cultura Contemporánea de Barcelona (CCCB), after it was selected through an open call. For that event, we self-financed the installation, changing €300 into cent coins of which, after the event, we got back €272. At the open courtyard of the CCCB, the public's reaction was surprisingly diverse: some people got obsessed with sticking coins into the piggy-banks; others threw coins in as if were a wishing well; of course there were those who stole some, filling their pockets, and children dove into it and used it as a play pen. In every case, this intervention questioned participation as such in these kinds of events: to cover the ground with these insignificant coins was a critical, mischievous and playful  act all in one. Besides this, there was the material attraction of these cent coins (they are considered residual, but cost more to make than their actual value): the way they shine, they rust. And, of course, the desire money raises in us all....

2012 - Puerta del latín Porta / Puerta from Latin Porta . Medellín (Colombia)Convocatoria La Puerta MAMM - Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín. (Finalista/finalist)

We've already talked about to this call and our proposal in this previous post. Our idea was to make the door (the space upon which we had to intervene) a space that could show what is was in itself. To do so, we worked with the etymology of the word (in Spanish) and composed a large scale, commemorative label that described the mythological origin of the term, printing the result on a false mirror surface: a mirage in which the door de-materializes and the reflected spectators become part of the intervention. Therefore, we reflected on the notion of limit, in the sense of restriction, as one of que quintessential aspects of architecture, where doors have played a crucial role, both as escape mechanisms and as a reaffirmation of that boundary.

2016 - LlamaLlama. Barcelona. Concurso Columnas cristalizadas.

The Mies van der Rohe foundation organized this competition on the 30th anniversary of the reconstruction of the Barcelona pavilion. The idea was to recreate the former eight columns and two bases that presided the original pavilion in 1929. Our response, which was both material and performative, was to produce eight smoke columns, that could be understood both as smoke signs or smoke screens, along with two containers. The proposal orchestrated the process of the act of lighting the fires and producing the smoke, highlighting the transformation of matter, the tools used and the all-important role of all the agents involved, both the actors and the viewers. Conceptually, is is closely related with the Cent Garden in the sense that this proposal also expresses our concerns regarding these calls and how one participates in them, how we question the performative nature of activities of this kind, adding to all of this our thoughts regarding heritage and the construction of its representation, something the competition entailed. In the end, our proposal is nothing other than a vanitas, like in Baroque painting, it is full of contradictions and opposing messages.

***

Let us close this recap with a piece of good news: our proposal "Paraíso cerrado/abierto" (Paradise closed/open) has been one of three selected interventions for the program Kiosko 2017 organized by the Centro José Guerrero in Granada. Therefore, in 2017, there will be ephemera! This is what the jury said about it:
Paradise closed/open summarizes, in the forcefulness of its formalization and in the way it has been carefully thought out, a reflection regarding the concept of limit, abandoned heritage and baroque culture.
