NARCISSUS

Los narcisos son plantas asociadas a un mito. De hecho, su nombre viene del joven mitológico llamado Narciso, quien de tanto embelesarse con su reflejo, enamorado de si mismo, acabó metamorfoseándose en la flor. El óleo Narciso, atribuido a Caravaggio, ilustra esa relación entre el joven y su reflejo. 

Los narcisos son plantas bulbosas, la mayoría de origen europeo de la región mediterránea, de larga tradición jardinera, y muy populares por su valor ornamental. Las flores suelen ser amarillas o blancas, y normalmente miran hacia abajo, como el joven del cuadro, asintiendo levemente cuando llega una brisa. Esta singular posición hace que sea difícil admirar su flor, ¿quién no se ha agachado alguna vez para poder ver mejor la flor de un narciso?

Si paseas en estos días por el Albaicín —un barrio "en sección" construido en ladera con terrazas, desniveles y jardines colgantes, descubrirás narcisos que se asoman a una tapia. En este caso, los narcisos te miran a ti.

Mirar hacía abajo / Nodding

Narcissus are plants identified with a myth. They are named after a mythological youth who was so in love with himself and so fond of his own reflection, that he ended up turning into this flower. The painting Narcissus, attributed to Caravaggio, illustrates the relationship between the youngster and his  reflection.

Narcissus are bulbous plants, most of them of European origin, from the Mediterranean region. They are part of a long-standing gardening tradition, and they are widely grown given their popularity as well as for their ornamental value. Their flowers are prevailingly white or yellow, they commonly look downwards, like the fellow in the painting, nodding slightly when a breeze comes along. This unique feature makes it a flower that is difficult to admire from above. Who hasn't ever bent down to have a better look at a narcissus?
These days, if you stroll through the Albayzin —a neighborhood "in section" built on a hill with terraces, tiers and hanging gardens, you may discover narcissus that look over a wall. Here, narcissus gaze down at you.

Desde la calle / From the street

Entre los trabajos del arquitecto paisajista está elegir donde plantar ciertas flores. Esto requiere estar atento a detalles como estos, que combinan naturaleza y cultura.
One of the chores of a landscape architect is to decide where to plant certain flowers. This requires paying attention to details like these, in which nature and culture come together.
