STIPA CHINOISERIE

El agro-chinesco y el 'cesto español'  / The agro-chinoise & 'the spanish basket'
148 years separate these two architectures, what do they have in common? (English text continues after Spanish text)

Esparto: vivo y manufacturado / living plant & handcrafted
ENGLISH TEXT

Despite the time that spans between these two architectures, both examples have a lot in common: they illustrate examples of ephemeral architectures built for an event; one has a certain Chinoiserie touch, the other one was in China, and above all both were built with similar materials: esparto grass (stipa tenacissima) and wicker.

The Esparto Pavilion (Amería) was a temporary structure, built on occasion of the visit of the Spanish Queen Isabel II in 1862. It was promoted by the guild of the esparto craftmen —during those days, one of the main local business. The pavilion wasn't merely ornamental and showy, the Queen used it to rest after she arrived by boat at the city port. The picture was taken by Charles Clifford, who accompanied the royal entourage. It is considered the first picture of Almería along with another one taken by the same author showing a  panoramic view of the city from La Chana neighborhood.

The Spanish Pavilion for Expo Shanghai 2010 (China) was designed by EMBT (Enric Miralles - Benedetta Tagliabue). According to the website of the architects: "the building, with an area of 8000 meters, is inspired on wicker baskets. Its façades will be covered by this material which is present both in Spanish and Chinese traditional arts & crafts".

We would like to express a wish: if our project for the Park of la Hoya (Almería) restarts, we would like to investigate the use of this material, esparto grass, in its live form for planting schemes and handcrafted to create shaded areas.

Las Hoyas / The Hollows

Presently, there are two hoyas in Almería: the New Hoya and the Old Hoya; our proposal gradually reveals one more hoya, the “Hoya-Plaza”

La Hoya Park [Park of the Hollow] is located in a setting of great historical, cultural and natural wealth. It is on the urban edge of the historic quarter, in contact with the landscape and beside the city’s monumental area and tourist attractions. Beyond the revitalisation of the Hoya, our proposal gradually reveals a new hollow; the “Hoya-Plaza”. The Hoya-Plaza takes on its role as a key urban element and becomes the public space that interconnects the system of open spaces and monuments: the New Hoya, the Old Hoya, the Alcazaba, the Historic Quarter and the Hill of San Cristobal. As a whole, the proposal brings to light the environmental values of the area and incorporates elements of the city’s heritage with the goal of generating a contemporary urban park that will become an open place for civic activities.
The project will be carried out in different stages. The intervention, especially regarding the urban edge, is understood as the process of slow, careful and informed growth of the park. Just as if it were a natural, ecological succession, each phase will incorporate complexity and diversity in order to build this new collective space in a sustainable manner.
Placed at the foot of the Alcazaba, in the contact zone between the Old Hoya and the Hoya-Plaza, the Visitor Center is a landscape-building that touches upon the different topographic elevations so as to make the Hoya permeable and accessible. The building intensifies the relationship between the park and the city, both at a physical and at a social level, and proposes, as part of the process of its own growth, a connection with one of the Alcazaba’s towers, la Torre del Saliente, by means of an elevator.
Within the remarkable concave space of the Hollow, the proposed environmental regeneration is based on the outlines set out by intelligent landscaping, or xeriscape, as well as on the incorporation of the archaeological remains that are likely to appear. Likewise, an effort is made to recover the historic man-made landscape elements of the site. All in all, the necessary spatial and programmatic mechanisms are created to produce new and diverse forms of civic appropriation.
