Tiempos: Concurso ganado en enero de 2009. Obra parte del Plan E. Redacción de proyecto básico y ejecución en un mes. Entregado el 31 de marzo de 2009. Licitación resuelta 3 meses después. El verano andaluz no perdona y la obra comienza en septiembre 2009. Año apasionante de obras. Finaliza en septiembre 2010. “Los Olivareros” se inaugura y abre al público el 23 de marzo de 2011.
En ese periodo de impasse entre la finalización oficial de la obra y su definitiva puesta en uso, tuvimos la suerte de que Pepe Florido se acercara al edificio y volcara sobre él su particular mirada. Cuando contamos esta intervención, casi siempre mencionamos su contexto urbano en transición. El entorno se mueve entre la desolación del peor planeamiento urbanístico contemporáneo, el aburrimiento de unas construcciones residenciales banales y la sinceridad de unas decrépitas arquitecturas industriales. Este confuso medio urbano, y en particular su versión utrerana y andaluza, lleva siendo objeto de la obra fotográfica de Pepe Florido desde hace ya algún tiempo. Así pues, sonreímos al ver cómo reacciona su objetivo de manera tan natural al enfocar sobre una intervención que, siempre entendimos, debía tener sus resonancias e incluso subrayar la necesidad urbana y espacial que nuestras ciudades tienen para que exista este paisaje de tensiones y confluencias.

Time line: A competition won in January 2009; the project becomes part of the central government’s economic stimulus plan. A full project drawn up in one month; handed in on March 31 2009. Call for tender solved in three months time. The Andalusian summer prevails and breaking ground takes place in September 2009. A thrilling year of building. Construction ends in September 2010. “Los Olivareros” is inaugurated and opens to the public on March 23 2011.
In the interim period between the end of construction work and its definite put to use, we were lucky enough to have Pepe Florido visit “Los Olivareros” and capture it through his own perspective. Whenever we explain this intervention, we almost always mention the transient nature of its urban context. Its surroundings waver between the desolation produced by the worst kind of contemporary urban planning, the boredom of trivial housing units and the sincerity of decrepit industrial architectures. This confusing urban milieu, and specifically Utrera’s and southern Spain’s version of it, has been an ongoing theme in Pepe Florido’s photographic work. That is why we smile when we see how his lens reacts naturally when it focuses upon a building that, as we always understood it, had to echo and even underline the urban and spatial need our cities have for the existence of this landscape of tensions and convergences.
