Aula magna, años setenta / Assembly Hall, 1970's |
Yesterday we ran into a local example of a modern, international typology: the Science Building of the University of Granada.

This building was designed in 1962 by Cruz López Müller. You can check out some basic information following these links: Data Base of Contemporary Architecture of Andalusia and Data Base of Fundación Do.co.mo.mo Ibérico (only available in Spanish).
The first phase of this building was finished in 1969, but over a period of thirty years it was expanded and renovated several times. The original design envisioned these future expansions by laying out a diagram in which wings branch out from a central core, also generating a series of patios. This central area includes all the main services.

We wandered about the Main Hall and we had the opportunity to watch a movie in the Assembly Hall. The Main Hall -central core of the building- is what we call "a covered modern plaza" where all fluxes converge, people meet and even study and work areas are available. It is a double height space with different floor levels and a mezzanine. The spiral staircase connects, along with two others, the main level with the mezzanine. Some of the original gardens and patios remain as integral parts of the space. The Assembly Hall, accessed independently, is "a singular volume", expressionist in spirit, with sharp clean edges that greet visitors who approach the Sciences building. The facade increases in height and the Hall's access is at the exact corner under a triangular shaped cantilever. The diamond shaped plan holds a seating area that fans out creating a wide field of vision. Nowadays the Cine Club of the University of Granada makes regular use of it, turning it into a lively space to be enjoyed on a daily basis.
We would like to underline the validity that these architectures still have. Conceived as they were as machine-like infrastructures, some have been able to evolve, both formally and the way they are put to use. In this case, this has probably been possible because of the equilibrium between the general anonymity of its compositional language and the identity that certain spatial and formal features contribute so that these buildings continue to be dynamic spaces both for those who inhabit them regularly and those of us who go there on occasion.
If you are in Granada and curiosity bites, we recommend visiting this building, and don't forget to check the movie agenda, there is always something interesting playing. We had a great time watching "The Magnificent Ambersons" (1942, Orson Welles), a very architectural film, by the way (a possible subject for another post), that we strongly recommend. This is the original trailer.
