We have just come back from Lisbon, today we want to share the photographic project Tribute / Tributo by Camilla Watson, that we encountered by chance on the walls of the Mouraria quarter. (English text continues after Spanish text)

The website of Camilla Watson explains the project in the following way: "Tribute / Tributo is an outdoor exhibition that started in September 2009 and continues indefinitely in Beco das Farihnas, Mouraria, Lisbon. A Tribute is a selection of portraits of people over the age of 70 living in the Beco das Farinhas, which is just by the Largo dos Trigueiros from where I live and work. When I first moved to Mouraria I was struck by the generosity and spirit if the elderly living here. I imagined their images printed onto the old walls of their homes. Many were born here and it feels, at least to me, that it is their spirit that makes this place. It is as if they are part of the walls themselves.(...). It has been a project very much integral to the community, with the elderly choosing images they felt comfortable with. It has turned out that they love the attention received from being on the walls. Tourists continually photograph them on their route to the Castelo Sao Jorge."
The artist is right. Exactly so, we were one of those tourists photographing the exhibition. We were just ambling around, enjoying the stunning views, taking in the atmosphere, the light blue sky, the soft pavings, the elegant domestic architecture... when we arrived at Largo dos Trigueros. The street was almost empty, every door and window was shut. It was really moving to find this installation in the middle of the street, as the artist says, you realize that the spirit of the people makes the place. Specially when you see a portrait of a man and his dog in the same door that you are just standing in front of, or another one of a old woman going down the same stairs that you are trying to climb. Architecture is definitely attached to people. Before finding the reference of the project, we thought that these were portraits of people who had been displaced to other parts of town. We hope all of these people still live there.
Historic quarters must continue to teem with the lives of their people.

La web de Camilla Watson explica así el proyecto: "Tribute/Tributo es una exposición al aire libre, que empezó en septiembre de 2009 y que continua de modo indefinido, en Beco das Farihnas, Mouraria, Lisboa. Tributo es una selección de retratos de gente alrededor de los 70 años que viven en Beco das Farinhas, en el Largo dos Triguerios donde vivo y trabajo. Cuando me mudé a Mouraria estaba impresionada por la generosidad y el espíritu de la gente mayor que vivía allí. Imaginé sus retratos impresos en los viejos muros de sus casas. Muchos nacieron allí y se siente, al menos para mi, que su espíritu hace el lugar. es como si ellos mismos fueran parte de las paredes (...). ha sido un proyecto muy integrado con la comunidad, con los mayores eligiendo aquellas fotos con las que se sentían cómodos. Y ahora adoran la atención recibida al estar en los muros. Los turistas continuamente los fotografían en su ruta de subida al Castelo Sao Jorge".
La artista tiene razón. efectivamente, nosotros fuimos uno de esos turistas que fotografiamos la exposición. Deambulábamos sin más razón que el paseo, disfrutando de las maravillosas vistas, absorbiendo la atmósfera, el suave azul del cielo, los pavimentos blandos, la elegante arquitectura doméstica,... cuando llegamos al Largo de los Trigueros. La calle está prácticamente vacía, puertas y ventanas cerradas. Fue realmente conmovedor encontrar esta instalación en mitad de la calle. Como la artista dice, las gentes encierran el espíritu del lugar. Especialmente cuando ves la foto de una señor y su perro fotografiados en la misma puerta que tienes enfrente, o cuando ves a una anciana bajando, agarrada a la pared, por las mismas escaleras que estás intentando subir. La arquitectura no se puede separar de las personas. Antes de encontrar las referencias de este proyecto y saber un poco más, pensábamos que se trataba de retratos de gente que había sido desplazada del barrio, a otro lugar. Esperamos que no sea así y que continúen viviendo allí mismo.
Los barrios históricos deben continuar bullendo con la vida de sus habitantes.
