On 23 March we announced on facebook and twitter that our proporsal had been selected for the call for ideas La Puerta (the door) organised by MAMM (Medellin Modern Art Museum), today we would like to describe our proposal and share some photos of the exhibition. La idea de límite, como restricción, ha sido siempre una de las principales variables del trabajo de la arquitectura. Rara vez se ha permitido una excepción al hecho de acotar y jerarquizar espacios, con el objetivo de conseguir el control de regímenes de propiedad, funciones, atmósferas y personas. No
obstante, las puertas son un escape cruel a este mecanismo. Escape, tal y como delata el origen de la
palabra, porque son una excepción a la rigidez formal del límite infranqueable; desvinculadas del simbolismo
aterrador de lo divino representan el vacío, son vanos ausentes de materia y símbolo por el que podemos transitar, en la antigüedad y ahora. Cruel, en cuanto a su ilusorio grado de libertad, pues enseguida los vanos son tecnológicamente equipados con mecanismos propios de cierre, apertura y control.
Esta propuesta conceptual, y visual, responde a la llamada del MAMM para una intervención temporal
en la puerta del museo. La puerta es representada por si misma como espacio simbólico, la intervención
desempolva el origen de la palabra e invita a los visitantes a ejercer un ejercicio reflexivo, a partir de confrontar la lectura y la propia imagen reflejada. A partir de una cuestión tan cotidiana como una puerta se desvela un siniestro significado olvidado.

El MAMM ha organizado una exhibición que muestra los finalistas y las dos propuestas ganadoras, primero en el centro comercial que patrocinaba la convocatoria y en estos días en la calle frente al museo, coincidiendo con la puesta en escena de la primera intervención. Nos ha hecho mucha ilusión recibir estas fotos que amablemente nos han enviado los responsables, ¡gracias por compartirlas con nosotros! Queremos dar la enhorabuena a todos los finalistas y especialmente a los dos ganadores, ambas propuestas nos resultan tremendamente sugerentes y transmiten una inquietante pausa.

The notion of limit, understood as restriction, has been an ever present variable within the field of architecture. There rarely has been a chance for exception in the process of enclosing and organizing spaces into hierarchies, with the goal of attaining control over property patterns, functions, atmospheres and people. However, doors imply a (cruel) escape mechanism for these rules. Escape in the sense that, as the origin of the word (in Latin "portare", for the Spanish "puerta") implies, doors are an exception within the formal rigidity of the insurmountable limits of a space; beyond their terrifying divine symbolism, they represent emptiness, gaps where matter is lacking, but where transition has always takes place since ancient times. The cruelty of the idea of the door lies in the fact that they are a mere illusion of a break in wall; the gaps are emidiately equipped with opening and closing mechanisms, locks and other controlling technologies.
This conceptual and visual proposal is a response to MAMM's call for ideas for the access door to its venue. The door represents itself as a symbolic space, revealing the ritualistic origin of the Latin word for it and inviting visitors to stop and think while reading about the origins of the word while at the same time looking at their own blurred reflection. Such a common thing as a door thus shows its sinister and forgotten origins.

MAMM has organized two exhibits showing the finalists and the two winning proposals, first in the shopping center that sponsored the call for ideas and at present on the street accross the museum venue, upon the door of which we can now see the first of the two winning proposals. We are delighetd to have received these pictures, kindly sent to us by the competition organisers. Thanks for sharing them! We would like to congratulate the finlaists and especially the winners. Both of the winning entries are moving and convey a stirring sensation of pause.
