We will present the in progress research project "Tourist Guide to Sinister Landscapes of the Spanish Coast". Here is the summary:

After the construction boom, an anti-touristic guide of the Spanish Coast in search of cases that are extreme and sinister.

Coastal landscapes are a narrow but intense stretch of territory that enables the definition and understanding of what we currently known as landscape, both physically and psychologically. In Spain, in less than 50 years time, the coast has been radically transformed. Tourism has been the main motor of change and has defined this landscape. Nowadays, immersed in a post-boom scenario, we are confronted with the obsolescence of these touristic landscapes. This research project traverses the Spanish coast in search of cases that are extreme and sinister: in ruins, abandoned, under developed, half built, stopped, mysterious, paradoxical…. The goal is to layout a series of questions and conclusions that insert themselves into the debate on how this landscape is used, built, protected or recycled.

LO CERCANO / HOW CLOSE

Aula magna, años setenta / Assembly Hall, 1970's
Yesterday we ran into a local example of a modern, international typology: the Science Building of the University of Granada.

ENGLISH TEXT
This building was designed in 1962 by Cruz López Müller. You can check out some basic information following these links: Data Base of Contemporary Architecture of Andalusia and Data Base of Fundación Do.co.mo.mo Ibérico (only available in Spanish).
The first phase of this building was finished in 1969, but over a period of thirty years it was expanded and renovated several times. The original design envisioned these future expansions by laying out a diagram in which wings branch out from a central core, also generating a series of patios. This central area includes all the main services.
Planta original y maqueta con ampliaciones posteriores / Original plan and model including later expansions
Regardless of the precariousness of some of construction methods and the materials used as well as the intense use it has had ever since -forty years worth of students and staff, the building still maintains most of its spacial qualities and its aesthetics: the exuberant gardens, the spiral staircase, the huge polka dot pattern design of its marble floors, the integrated design of steel trusses and wood coffers in the ceiling of the main hall, certain color schemes, some of the finishings and a few pieces of furniture and lighting features.

We wandered about the Main Hall and we had the opportunity to watch a movie in the Assembly Hall. The Main Hall -central core of the building- is what we call "a covered modern plaza" where all fluxes converge, people meet and even study and work areas are available. It is a double height space with different floor levels and a mezzanine. The spiral staircase connects, along with two others, the main level with the mezzanine. Some of the original gardens and patios remain as integral parts of the space. The Assembly Hall, accessed independently, is "a singular volume", expressionist in spirit, with sharp clean edges that greet visitors who approach the Sciences building. The facade increases in height and the Hall's access is at the exact corner under a triangular shaped cantilever. The diamond shaped plan holds a seating area that fans out creating a wide field of vision. Nowadays the Cine Club of the University of Granada makes regular use of it, turning it into a lively space to be enjoyed on a daily basis.

We would like to underline the validity that these architectures still have. Conceived as they were as machine-like infrastructures, some have been able to evolve, both formally and the way they are put to use. In this case, this has probably been possible because of the equilibrium between the general anonymity of its compositional language and the identity that certain spatial and formal features contribute so that these buildings continue to be dynamic spaces both for those who inhabit them regularly and those of us who go there on occasion.

If you are in Granada and curiosity bites, we recommend visiting this building, and don't forget to check the movie agenda, there is always something interesting playing. We had a great time watching "The Magnificent Ambersons" (1942, Orson Welles), a very architectural film, by the way (a possible subject for another post), that we strongly recommend. This is the original trailer.

CIEN AÑOS DE ARQUITECTURA EN ANDALUCIA /A HUNDRED YEARS OF ARCHITECTURE IN ANDALUSIA

Artículo recién publicado / Just published article: Producción arquitectónica y publicaciones periódicas de arquitectura en Andalucía durante el siglo XX (Paula Álvarez Benítez, Vincent Morales Garoffolo, Juan Antonio Sánchez Muñoz)  (English text continues after Spanish text)

Revistas formando el mapa de Andalucía / Magazines drawing the shape of Andalusia

This article is part of the publication Cien años de arquitectura en Andalucía. El registro Andaluz de Arquitectura Contemporánea, 1900-2000. (A Hundred Years of Architecture in Andalusia. The Andalusian  Registry of Contemporary Architecture. 1900-2000). The publication is part of the collection e-ph cuadernos belonging to the Instituto Andaluz de Patrimonio Histórico (IAPH). Our collaboration compiles a research project we did with Paula Álvarez. Thanks to it we had the chance of  spending some interesting days of team work exploring  magazines, fanzines, collections, etc. that have been published in Andalusia over the last century
This is the summary of the article:

"It is beyond this text's objectives to thoroughly review how Andalusian architecture publications have approached the architectural production of the region. However we do want to contribute some preliminary ideas, centered on periodicals, that may lead to further research in the field. On the one hand, by delimiting the field we have striven to homogenize the analysis within a body of diverse and heterogeneous publications in order to establish a dialogue among the brief notes we contribute. On the other hand, since these publications are the result of the work of architects, they can be understood as part of Andalusian architectural production themselves. Following Beatriz Colomina's words, periodicals, like other mass media, have been widely regarded as the places in which architecture is actually produced. From our point of view, the conception and development by architects of this other "place" can only be understood as another work of architecture.
We submit critical and descriptive summaries of the following reviews, following their chronological order of appearance: Revista Arquitectura Andalucía Oriental (AQ), Anuario, Periferia, Geometría, Documentos de Arquitectura (DA), Revista PH, Guías de Arquitectura, Archivos De Arquitectura (AA), Rizoma, Revista Neutra, Revista de Historia y Teoría de la Arquitectura, Boletín Fidas, Páginas de Arquitectura ( Diario de Sevilla), Periódico de Arquitectura, Almenas, ARV. "

We want to invite you to download the pdf of the publication (click here) —thanks to IAPH for sharing it!. We hope you will enjoy it. Our article can be found on pages 154-174. We would also like to thank the coordinators who invited us to join this great project. Congratulations to the entire team!

On April 16th the Spanish selection for the VIII BIAU (Iberian & Latin-american Architecture and Urbanism Biennal) was announced. Andalusian architecture is widely represented. Our congratulations to everyone! We would like to make a brief but special mention to the work of those closer to us, friends we usually  run into in Sevilla.
Stories of time in art and architecture)
Ángel Martínez García-Posada. Editorial: Lampreave
We've coincided with Angel numerous times: we kindly received from him his knowledge and advice about the world of publishing, given his role as co director of Neutra right before we took over the magazine, and he collaborated in Neutra 15 with the article "The Trace of Things". In 2009 we went to the presentation of his book. An intriguing stone, photographed at two different moments in time, shown on the cover and back cover, visually synthesizes the subtlety of a piece of work that reveals the importance of the passing of time. "Time turned into space" is a theme narrated transversely through visiting and cross referencing  samples of "the usual suspects", that is artists and projects essential to architecture.

Casa más o menos: la vivienda como proceso / The more or less house: housing as process
Eva and Rubén are close colleagues. We became familiar with the architectural proposals for the "more or less house" from the start, and in issue number 17 of Neutra we had the chance of publishing an artcile that recounted the materialization of this experience. As a design process it has always strived to search for new ways of producing collective housing, this research  is broadening its scope and having more impact, finding a new platform for its continuation in http://masqueunacasa.org/

Laboratorio 10+1 DMLC. Programa de actuación paisajísticaen el Distrito Minero Linares-La Carolina / Laboratory 10+1 DMLC. Action on Landscape Program in the Mining Distric of Linares-La Carolina.
We met Enrique and Vicky while visiting a series of firms in Seville that have landscape as a core theme in their work and research. We were in the process of writing an article about these matters for an issue of Neutra that never came to be, given that its publishing was suspended due to a decision taken by the Colegio de Arquitectos de Sevilla, owner of the magazine. With the article still in mind, we recall how Enrique enthusiastically told us about the guideline of this program: the understanding of landscape as a project that manages a certain territory and its complex processes.
Nuevos modelos de intervención en el espacio público / New models of intervention in public space
Paula and José María are very close colleagues. We worked together during the period we were in charge of Neutra, sharing a lot more than a meeting table. We know that both of them have been working on this new research project full time and with full force. A brief presentation of it can be seen on the Arquía/Próxima platform. From this preview one can grasp its depth and rigor, which makes us all the more expectant to know more about this impressive piece of work.

We wish you all the best of luck for the final selection!

We want to share some brief impressions after ambling around the outside of the building and experiencing that which its authors aspired to: generate a proposal that, in itself, finds its meaning by moving between different realities. (English text continues after Spanish text)

Espacio público, ciudad y paisaje / Public space, city & landscape
Rurbanidad / Rurbanity
English Text
The project summary starts by describing the site, placed on the edge of the town, and continues telling us that the building becomes an element of transition. The place is far from our usual whereabouts, so after visiting this project, we feel like playing a game in which we can interpret and reflect upon the meaning of this intervention. We will reread the authors’ description of the project from the perspective of our visit. We will zoom into the place in order to reveal other border conditions in which to look for the meaning of “transition” in this case.
The visit
Due to our travel route, we got to the town of Roa from Peñafiel following the road BU-133. We arrived from the southwest and drove around the town. That is, we approached the building the other way around. We arrived from the opposite direction of the usual narrative of the project: the tower appeared, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, poking up above the town’s rooftops, not on the foreground and from a distance. We reached the site from its side and the tower suddenly loomed above us. From there we admired the landscape of the flat plateau that the project summary describes. Given that it was holiday, the building was closed, so we were unable to visit its interior. We experienced its exterior and its setting. The inside will remain an imagined space known to us only through drawings and pictures. We ambled around for a while, around the town and the surrounding fields, until we continued our journey seeing the tower gradually become smaller on the rear-view mirror.
A play on scales
Our perception is influenced by our journey there. Several hours had gone by since we had left behind the last city, Valladolid. We had taken a detour from the highway and followed the course of the river Duero. We had made a point of stopping at Peñafiel in order to see the “plaza del Coso” (subject of a future post). From there we traversed the area using a minor road, enjoying a landscape dedicated in its most part to a rich wine industry. Hence our interpretation of the setting on an edge of this project as a dichotomy: the site is a hundred percent rural, whilst the activity it embodies, once it is converted to use, transcends all boundaries. This duality is very intriguing from a contemporary point of view, especially fro architecture, because it informs research into current phenomena such as the concept of “rurbanity”, the outreach of what is actually urban, the growth of suburbanism and the ubiquitous presence of the city. Over the last few years, rural areas and small towns in Spain have seen their material and social assets enhanced through the construction of new buildings and public spaces, thus experiencing the emergence of new uses that were once exclusive to cities. Beyond mimetic approaches, the response that architecture has given in this context has sometimes been that of estrangement. In settings often characterized by either bad architecture, be it old or new, or in mere disrepair, and by environments that ugly and hard to grasp, these new facilites, most of which are placed on the edges or within difficult settings, have flourished as new and autonomous architectures, shinny and beautiful in some cases, but always as exceptions to the norm of those contexts. But not necessarily as a strange object alien to its setting. In these cases, estrangement has usually given more to a place than what it has taken away. It has proposed the generation of public space where once wastelands prevailed. It has also given new collective identity through modest centralities and excentricities, and with great care has solved that fragile transition between urban and rural spaces in small towns.
In this case the building, the project, is strange due to its sophistication, not because of its strangeness or alien relationship to the place. As a transitional element it gathers up the notion of landscape, monument, settlement, size, shape, materiality and image. The tower recalls the ancient past. The small square-balcony, in its openness and its intimateness, enables a look out point, a reminder that buildings are not the sole object of the work of the architect, but that the entire city is. The careful stitching up of the town’s torn layout as well as the sealing-up of party walls and other elements leave nothing out. The integration of pre-existing structures such as the hospital building and the remaining wall of a church in ruins seems natural given the continuity of the design. Fragmentation, as a tool, is used here because it is within the spirit of the relationship between the town and its fields. And its aesthetic discourse through color and material, making use of monotony as a theme, prove that this is the project for that place.
Whatever your travel plans through the area may be it deserves a visit.

On 23 March we announced on facebook and twitter that our proporsal had been selected for the call for ideas La Puerta (the door) organised by MAMM (Medellin Modern Art Museum), today we would like to describe our proposal and share some photos of the exhibition. (English text continues after Spanish text)

No
Medellín: algunos finalistas / some of the finalists (Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín)

El origen de la palabra puerta / The origin of the word door (puerta)
English Text:
Puerta. From latín porta / Call for proposals la puerta (the door)
Medellín (Colombia). MAMM. 2012

The notion of limit, understood as restriction, has been an ever present variable within the field of architecture. There rarely has been a chance for exception in the process of enclosing and organizing spaces into hierarchies, with the goal of attaining control over property patterns, functions, atmospheres and people. However, doors imply a (cruel) escape mechanism for these rules. Escape in the sense that, as the origin of the word (in Latin "portare", for the Spanish "puerta") implies, doors are an exception within the formal rigidity of the insurmountable limits of a space; beyond their terrifying divine symbolism, they represent emptiness, gaps where matter is lacking, but where transition has always takes place since ancient times. The cruelty of the idea of the door lies in the fact that they are a mere illusion of a break in wall; the gaps are emidiately equipped with opening and closing mechanisms, locks and other controlling technologies.
This conceptual and visual proposal is a response to MAMM's call for ideas for the access door to its venue. The door represents itself as a symbolic space, revealing the ritualistic origin of the Latin word for it and inviting visitors to stop and think while reading about the origins of the word while at the same time looking at their own blurred reflection. Such a common thing as a door thus shows its sinister and forgotten origins.

Propuestas ganadoras / Wining entries  (Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín)
The exhibition
MAMM has organized two exhibits showing the finalists and the two winning proposals, first in the shopping center that sponsored the call for ideas and at present on the street accross the museum venue, upon the door of which we can now see the first of the two winning proposals. We are delighetd to have received these pictures, kindly sent to us by the competition organisers. Thanks for sharing them! We would like to congratulate the finlaists and especially the winners. Both of the winning entries are moving and convey a stirring sensation of pause.

MARGEN Y CIUDAD / MARGIN AND CITY - CAAC (2/4)

Flagrant Delit -M. Vriesendorp & Delirious New York -R.Koolhaas
This is the second post of a series of four about the group of exhibitions Margin and City, organised by the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC). Today we would like to tell you about our selection of pieces from the exhibition Cities, like People, Can Be Recognized by Their Walk (English text continues after Spanish text)

Estructuras Invisibles / Invisible Structures - Xavier Ribas

English text:
To write a thorough entry about the entire exhibition would be too long for this blog's format, so we would like to point out what caught our attention, as we wandered through it.
In the Royal Pavilion and the Outer Chapel there is a selection of photographs that are worth seeing. In the chapel part of the work carried out by the well-known AFAL photography association is exhibited: we really liked one shot called Esquina de Arturo Soria from 1957 by Paco Gómez. Where the shop used to be we can admire the work by our colleague and friend Jorge Yeregui (of whom we’ll publish a post later) together with an interesting triptych by Xavier Ribas. This triptych, from the series Invisible Structures (2006-2008), shows a jungle. The photos have been taken in the remote archaeological site of Waka', Reserva de la Biosfera Maya, El Petén, Guatemala. But because the area where the photo was taken is a suburban residential area of the ancient Waka’, we can’t see anything beyond the nature of the deep jungle. The author says that “ it is of secondary archaeological interest compared to its ceremonial centres and elite residential compounds, and it tends to remain unexcavated, deep in the rainforest floor, estranged from the work of archaeological documentation and historical interpretation that begins exploring from the center. This 'periphery' of the city, and in a sense of archaeology, or of history, is the subject of this work.” We found this very intriguing.
If we jump to the North Wing, right in the entrance room, where we can watch a fragment of the movie Metropolis by Fritz Lang  —we wish the projection would have been of the complete film. Further on, there is a very interesting eclectic room about New York. In the same space, among other things, we can read two original letters handwritten by Federico Garcia Lorca that are very touching; both letters reveal the impact that the city had in the poet. We also can take a look at a first edition of the book "Delirious New York" by Rem Koolhaas and watch the animated movie based on the famous painting Flagrant Delit which was the cover illustration of that book, both  by Madelon Vriesendorp. Just the viewing of this film makes the exhibition worth visiting!
Inauguración/ Inauguration EXPO'92
If you still have energy to go continue, just beyond this room and along the corridor there is a huge collection of postcards of Seville by Nazario. The postcards depict the varied approaches tourism has had in portraying cities. At each end of the corridor there are 2 parallel projections: a propaganda movie of the inauguration of the Exposición Iberoaméricana in 1929 and a collection of extracts from TV programs showing the inauguration of the EXPO’92 and stunning aerial views of the fair grounds. Both events were hosted in Seville and both had a major impact on the city even though they were short-lived events and their model rapidly became obsolete .These two projections, among other pieces from the Expo'92 may be the introduction to a retrospective exhibition about the Expo that has yet to be done, especially now that its 20th anniversary is approaching,
We would like to wrap up this post by pointing out a piece of purely architectural work. More or less toward the middle of the mentioned corridor, a surprising example of modern architecture in Sevilla is shown, the apartments block on Felipe II (called Parque Porvenir or Nucleo Residencial Oscar Carvallo). By contrast with the materials that speak of urban events and tourism, it is interesting to note this piece as the result of the day to day work of architecture, and most importantly, in the field of housing. Its technical rigor is accompanied by an architectural discourse typical of its time, modernity, with its very specific views of urbanity.
There is much more to see and talk about, and we skipped very interesting works, like the projects by Prada Poole or the films by J.S. Bollain . But this was just a selection result of our drift.

This exhibition is open till the next 4th of March, more infowww.caac.es
